Granville Island Brewing Teams Up with JJ Bean to Launch Mocha Porter
first B.C. brewery to combine decaf cold brew and beer

Vancouver, B.C. November 21, 2016 – Granville Island Brewing (Granville) and JJ Bean, Vancouver’s leading coffee roaster, have announced a new collaboration: the Mocha Porter. The first of its kind to hit the craft beer market, Granville’s Mocha Porter is infused with a custom-made Peruvian dark roast coffee from JJ Bean and cocoa nibs, creating a special winter porter to enjoy this holiday season.

“This brew is blended with a variety of special dark malts, resulting in a smooth, deeply layered and complex beer,” says Kevin Emms, Brewmaster, Granville Island Brewing. “We add ground up coffee beans from JJ Bean in conditioning until we have well-balanced notes of coffee, without overwhelming the palate, bringing together two of my favourite things – coffee and beer!”

The combination of coffee and cocoa nibs give the brew its distinct mocha flavour. JJ Bean’s Peruvian coffee was custom roasted for this collaboration, and slow-steeped in the conditioning tanks to create a rich and robust, full-bodied porter with roasted notes and deep caramel sweetness.

The partnership between the two Vancouver based businesses is a relationship that has been brewing for some time.

“Not many people know this but Granville Island is home to JJ Bean’s first café,” says Grady Buhler, Coffee Quality Leader, JJ Bean. “The brewmaster at that time, Vern, supplied me with great-tasting brews after work and I ensured he was able to make it through the day with a cup of joe. Collaborating to create the Mocha Porter is a tribute to our long history with Granville Island Brewing.”

Granville’s Mocha Porter brew is almost like a darker version of the coveted Lions Winter Ale, a seasonal favourite among West Coast beer drinkers.

Mocha Porter is available in retail stores for a limited time in 650ml bottles.

About JJ Bean

The Neate family has been roasting coffee in Vancouver for four generations. Vancouver B.C. (November 23rd, 2016)

Steamworks is kicking off their new Barrel aging program with the release of a 2016 Barrel Aged Imperial Stout.

Aged in Bourbon Barrels, it pours near black with a thick tan head. Aromas of vanilla and oak give way to robust flavours of bourbon and chocolate. The beer is a very special release, perfect for rainy days or for cellaring away for further maturing.

Steamworks brewmaster Julia Hanlon expands on the release: "We're really excited to release our first barrel aged beer, it was definitely a labour of love at the brewery, hopefully people get a chance to try it!"

The beer will be available later the first week of December in extremely limited quantities at select private liquor stores. However, bottles will be exclusively available at 12pm on Friday the 25th at the Steamworks Brewery and Taproom - 3845 William St. The taproom also has a very limited number of kegs of the new stout and will be serving glasses of it until the kegs are tapped!

Deck the halls with a bunch of bombers. Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-yum.

3 Brand New Seasonal Bombers

Freshen up the beer fridge for the Holidays

November 21st, 2016 - The Holidays are almost upon us and with the number of seasonal pressures that can cause stress levels to spike, an empty beer fridge is not something you want to mess around with.  We are releasing 3 brand new seasonal bombers to make sure you're well stocked, and to bring a bit of extra fun to your fridge for those moments of blissful indulgence.  Anxiety is a rich Belgian quad; Missile Toad is a hopped up double IPA; and Bass Shaker is a peach sour aged with oak.

All 3 seasonals are available exclusively at private craft-beer focused liquor stores.  If you find yourself in Victoria this week pop on by the brewery on Thursday between 4-6 to try all 3 on tap!

About the beers:

Missile Toad Imperial IPA - 9.0%

'Tis the season to chill back at the pad with one of these toad-ally hoppy brews.  Missile Toad is loaded with fruit forward Ella hops from across the pond (New Zealand), to create a double IPA worth croaking about.

Tropical fruit, citrus, floral and spicy—this brew covers most of the range of hoppy flavours in one bottle.  Though “balanced” is not usually associated with the IIPA style, Missile Toad drinks extremely easily with a dry finish and a bitterness that doesn’t hang around.

Anxiety Belgian Quad - 8.0%

Incessent Christmas songs, the throng of the crowd, or the wild card of relative relations--whatever your challenges this Holiday season we hope that this big, bold, malty Belgian quad helps deliver some sweet relief.

Anxiety is medium in body, pours a deep amber colour, and features aromas of sweet raisins and freshly baked bread.  Crafted with real Belgian Candi sugar and authentic Abbey yeast, phenolics and esters are slightly muted in this expression that showcases rich malts and a warming finish.

Bass Shaker Oak Aged Peach Sour - 4.8%

The Sour Note Series plays on with Bass Shaker: a sour ale brewed with peaches and aged in oak.  Like all sour ales in the series, this beer was soured with our own in-house lactobacillus strain, discovered when our maltster noticed some delicious aromas coming from our spent grain and suggested we culture it.  The result was a wonderfully tart flavour signature that is completely unique to our brewery.

On the palate, ripe peaches and careful aging with medium-plus American oak chips impart subtle nuances of sweet charred fruit and vanilla.  Very tart
