summer beers

my notes from tuesday's beer column on cbc radio one's on the coast with stephen quinn: Spring, schming! This year we seem to have skipped Spring and gone directly to Summer.  Here's what I think you should drink now Summer's here: Generally people like a more effervescent beer in the summer months.  When the weather heats up, people lean more towards the beers that seem “lighter” – in body, and often in alcohol too.  Wheat beers are a great summer choice as they have extra thirst quenching ability because of their increased acidity from the wheat: Belgian witbiers are brewed with malted barley and raw wheat, lightly spiced with coriander and bitter orange peel, and subtly hopped.  They pair really well with vinaigrette salads, shrimp, thai food and brunch faves like bacon and eggs.   Local examples of the style:   Yellow Dog Take a Walk Wit – 4.9% - available in 4 packs of tall cans and at the tasting room; Strange Fello...

legacy

new beers at legacy liquor store in vancouver: Southern Tier Brewing - IPA - $17.55 (6 Pack) In Lakewood, New York, on the shores of Lake Ontario, resides the brew house of Southern Tier Brewing. This beer, simply named ‘IPA,’ pours a beautiful amber colour with a nose of citrus, pine and a touch of caramel from the intense yet balanced hop presence found both in its bouquet and on the palate. An outstanding beer. Joel Wilson | Beer Team | Legacy Liquor Store Shmaltz Brewing - Coney Island Albino Python - $7.45 Another brew from our friends on the far side of the continent, New York to be precise, this White Lager is brewed with ginger, fennel and orange peel (think Belgian Wit, but not at all). Cloudy and straw-coloured, with a one-two punch of ginger and zest, this crisp, light NY brew is a must. Conor Marshall | Beer Team | Legacy Liquor Store Gaffel Kölsch - $4.25 This classic German beer style is making a serious splash this summer. Clear and golden in colour with earthy yeas...

beer column

in case you missed me on the radio last night here are my notes from my "spring beers" chat with stephen quinn: The warmer weather makes you want to drink a lighter beer, to start putting aside those stouts and porters in favour of beers with crisper finishes and flavours that dance on the tongue. This is traditionally the time of year when lagers come to the forefront of beer consumption. I think the word of the season moves from "comforting" or "warming" to "refreshing" There are two traditional beer styles that are associated with Spring.   Maibock, or May bock, which is brewed specifically for springtime consumption and Saisons which, before the invention of refrigeration, were brewed in the Spring to be consumed over the summer when weather got too hot to support brewing. Maibocks are light in color with that refreshing lager crispness, but they have a heavier body and generally higher alcohol content than other light colored beer s...

at this week's edition of beernesday i enjoyed the following brews: chuckanut brewing kolsch - 5%  gentle, slightly fruity, complex undertones of malt, refreshing yes, definitely fruity.  i don't much love a kolsch, and am not sure why i keep trying them, but this one was quite nice! skagit brewing english best bitter - 7.5%  a real bitter with malts that are relatively restrained in favor of wide, flat bittering.  a clean, working man's ale.  not prolific, but a smart choice i tried this one because i wanted to know if it was skagit brewing i'm not fond of or just their ipa.  definitely just their ipa.  this bitter was definitely a smart choice! skagit brewing helmet pale ale - 5.5%  brewed extremely pale and distinctly hoppy.  crisp and refreshing this light ale is a classic 'northwestern style' pale ale.  unfiltered and dry-hopped for extra flavor i tried this one because it got me at northwestern style and dry-hopped, and i...
