because i wasn't sure about it i had more of the central city oaked esb cask last night this time i did my sampling at the cascade room i like it, i really do it's hoppy and complex i still have no idea what that flavour is though, but my guess is it is from the oak hell, maybe it's oak like i've never oaked before and while i was there, i couldn't resist the welsh rarebit gawd, i love welsh rarebit!!

beer column

my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio one's on the coast where i chatted about beer bellies and nutritional value of beer with stephen quinn Local craft brewers love to put a list of ingredients on the bottle as evdence that they're making quality products - - but what you won't find on the bottle is a calorie count. This topic came up during an off the air conversation Stephen Quinn and I had a little while ago.   Through his extensive research this fall tasting some of the new craft brews out there he noticed that his pants appeared to be growing tighter, which caused him to wonder how many calories are in those delicious craft beers anyway. The internet is full of medical articles about both the health benefits and health detriments of beer. A couple of articles that were getting a lot of attention, and I mentioned in a previous beer column, were a University of Wisconson study that found that Guinness really IS good for you - it "may w...

wee angry scotch

Image
the cask of oak-aged wee angry scotch at the railway on tuesday night was a whole lot of delicious! malty and dark roasty and smooth deep mystery in a pint glass! i much prefer the oaked to the whiskeyed i think this might be my favourite wee angry scotch cask to date! it was a bit too dark for my lager loving friends so they went for the red racer lager it was a darned fine way to begin an evening of beering it up!

kudos

from the camra newsletter: At last year's Vancouver Home Brewing Awards Matt Anderson and Danny Seeton took the Best in Show award for their 'Rocket to Russia' bourbon oak-aged Imperial Stout, and as part of their award they've brewed a full 14000 litre batch of this beer with Yaletown Brewing brewmaster Iain Hill. After spending over a month and a half conditioning, Rocket to Russia will go on tap this Thursday at Yaletown Brewing. Matt, Danny, and Iain describe this 10.5% abv Imperial Stout as being very smooth with a distinctive American oak flavour reminiscent of new world red wines. Matt, Danny, and Iain will be on hand for the launch at this Thursday's cask event. i hear that the launch went really well and that you can still try the rocket to russia - so get on over there and try some!! way to go guys!
