from last week's beer column : Spring beers offer diverse mash-up of flavours 'It's nice to get out of the dark days of winter and celebrate with a beer that looks lighter in the glass' CBC News March 30, 2017 Beer writer Joe Wiebe says, 'Beer has never been as good as it is right now in B.C.' (Getty Images) 31  shares Believe it or not — it's finally spring out there. Despite all the rain, we are seeing daytime temperatures creep into the double digits and that's good enough for  On The Coast  beer columnist Rebecca Whyman to shift into spring mode when it comes to beer. "I think we can all agree, though, that it is nice to get out of the dark days of winter and celebrate with a beer that looks lighter in the glass." Spring has the fewest beer styles associated with it, Whyman says, but the beer history buff pulled out a few traditionally seasonal recommendations. Bock beer Bock beers are strong lagers from G...

beer column

my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio one's on the coast with stephen quinn: I'm feeling optimistic enough about the arrival of Spring to talk about Spring beers. I think we can all agree that it is nice to get out of the dark days of winter and celebrate with a beer that looks lighter in the glass than a stout. Of all the seasons of the year though, Spring has the fewest beer styles associated with it.  Traditionally, and when I say traditionally, I mean in the Olde Worlde of beer (aka Germany and Belgium) – traditionally a bock was the beer style that indicated spring had arrived. Bocks are strong lagers from Germany.  You know it’s a bock if there’s a goat on the label.  The beer style is said to have originated in Einbeck, and then when it was adopted by Munich brewers in the 17 th century, it was often mispronounced as Ein Bock, which means a billy goat.  So the beers became known as Bocks and often the label goes for the pun with a ...

beer travel

love beer and cider, will travel! i'm off to corvallis this weekend to pick up a case of my all-time favourite cider: 2 towns hop and stalk dry-hopped rhubarb cider and of course drink beer in and around corvallis and portland with a stop at the mcmenamins olympic club in centralia then, i'll be heading back to portland next weekend to pick up the rest of my breakside brewing bottle club 2015 beers, watch the whitecaps at providence park - where you can actually drink yummy craft beer and cider, and quality assure the fine beers being brewed and served in that wonderful city it's a tough life, but someone's gotta live it

beer column

my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio's on the coast: What's going on in beer world this week: - As we head into the latter half of February, it’s Annual General Meeting time here in Vancouver – both the VanBrewers Home Brew club and the Campaign for Real Ale Vancouver (CAMRA) are holding their AGMs this month. VanBrewers on February 20th at Direct Tap and CAMRA on February 27th at the Biltmore – so if you haven’t checked out these organizations yet, now would be a great time. And if you’re already a member, may I suggest you check your membership as it might be time to renew for the coming year! - Budweiser trended on social media when Peyton Manning said in an interview that he’d celebrate his Superbowl win by drinking a lot of beer, and in particular Budweiser beer. Peyton Manning’s love letter to Budweiser did not go unnoticed by craft brewers. The Brewers Association in America responded to Manning by letter, saying that they hoped he would tr...

my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio's on the coast: It’s a new month, so it must be time for another new brewery to open!  Trading Post brewing is juuuust about open in Langley.  The grand opening is February 13th.  You can visit them on 64 th Ave in Langley, close to Willowbrook shopping centre.  The tasting room will have a growler tap, charcuterie pairings and a loft lounge with views of the brewery.  A taphouse and eatery in Fort Langley will follow later this Spring.  R and B Brewing’s new taproom should be open in the next couple of weeks as well, featuring 12 taps, 2 cask engines for beer, and local wine and cider.  And handmade pizzas!  Located at 54 East 4 th Avenue in Vancouver. Some upcoming beer events:  February 3 rd is Strange Fellows Brewing’s next Strange Day:  From 7-11 p.m at the brewery on Clark Drive they’ll be celebrating the Japanese Setsubun – exorcise demons, drink beer, eat lu...

frustration

can no one just provide a straight-forward, simple answer to a direct question any more? look how frustrated i am, i'm talking in huge generalities! i have been trying for the past couple of days to find out if vancouver breweries and distilleries can just up and start selling each others' products with no further ado. do you suppose the city or the province could tell me? nope. my tweet to @CityofVancouver August 3rd: "Do local breweries & distilleries need to do anything before they start selling each others' drinks under the new BC law?" tweet from @CityofVancouver August 4th: "Morning! I would suggest contacting the LCLB in regards to the Liquor Control and Licensing Act [link to Liquor Control and Licensing Branch page at gov.bc.ca website]" my tweet to @CityofVancouver August 4th: "Thanks but I need to know if the City will allow breweries to sell hard liquor, and distilleries to sell beer, wine & cider" tweet f...
