most days it is pretty darned good to be me tuesday was no exception i got to attend the launch for central city brewing's red racer copper ale they beered us and appy'd us at joey's on broadway and gary lohin himself told us all about the copper ale then there were samples of the I-5 amarillo ale and swag bags to take home the copper ale is a beautiful copper colour - thank you munich malts! not as hop-forward as the rest of the red racer beers this is a much more malty offering based on a recipe gary used to brew at central city and hoping to capture the not-so-hop-loving segment of the population (can you say conversion beer?!) it fills a gap in the red racer line up oh, and it's a very tasty number! easy drinking with lots of malty goodness definitely a departure from the rest of the line-up, but still the quality beer we've come to expect from central city central city is also taking this opportunity to introduce a 500 ml can hoping to get mo...

here are my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio one's on the coast: I sometimes bring in beers for Stephen Quinn and I to taste in the studio. This week I brought in not one, but four beers for tasting - but you won't find these beers at the liquor store or at a local brewery. These beers were brewed at home.  (We only got to the first three on air, but see below for my tasting notes on all four.) Whoa!   Isn't it difficult to brew beer yourself? Shouldn't we just leave it to the professionals? Hardly!  Brewing beer at home is actually quite easy and involves a minimal financial investment. just in time for ipa day, i drank a hoppy bitch! from trade route brewing  of pacific washington she's only 60 ibus according to the bottle and very nicely balanced but yes, she is a hoppy bitch! website says: This northwest IPA is bold and balanced, with a rich malty flavor and a strong hop presence. We use premium 2-Row, Crystal, Munich and Victory malts to create the perfect base for showcasing Yakima-grown Columbus hops. After one sip you’ll agree, this is one hoppy bitch of a beer. 6.3% ABV 80 IBU amanda and sarah brought this one back for me from washington because they love me and because they rock!!   i liked it its not a hop monster, so you could probably taste another beer after this one! its not going to make my top ten list but i would definitely and quite happily have this one again

i am a huge clash fan so when i heard upright brewing was doing an ode to the clash in beer form i just about peed my pants i was so happy its been on my "beers i wanna drink" wish list for a while now then it arrived at the alibi room too cheap to pay the $22 for a bottle right then and there, i got my insider beer buddy to find out where i could buy myself a bottle retail turns out they carry it at brewery creek so i got me one for the lower price of $12 which for 1 pint, 9.4 fluid ounces seems like a good deal! okay, so nowhere does it actually say its an ode to the clash, or even to punk rock in general, but i'm going to say that it is and go with it, because that makes me happy and i like to be happy it works for me can i just say its got way toooooo much head? frothy frothy head that pours inches tall for each cm of beer i managed to get into my glass its been a long several minutes and i'm still waiting for the head to go down enough to get to...

in my glass today is mikkelle r's stateside ipa pours with an insanely abundant head (on a vigourous pour), which remains all lacey and creamy on the sides of my glass as i prepare for the first sip i dig the green striped label and the hoppy aromas wafting toward me first sip is bitter like a little too bitter second sip is better, i'm adjusting to the bitter 7%, water, malt (pilsner, munich and caramunich), flaked oats, hops (chinook, cascade and centennial) and ale yeast bet its the flaked oats that provided the creamy head! the bottle says:  "Our love of American microbrews inspired us to make this IPA.  It's brewed with generous amounts of aromatic American hops to provide significant freshness and bitterness with lot of citrus notes, which are nicely balanced by the sweetness of caramel malt." still tasting more bitter than i am sweetness of caramel malt but finding it more drinkable the further down the glass i get! the website is in danish...
