patios

due to a lack of space in the july/august edition of the bc craft beer news my lengthy article on the best craft beer patios in vancouver got truncated the whole article is available online but i'm also copying it here Summer time and the living is easy… not to mention best enjoyed on a patio! In a departure from my usual format and just in time for summer 2014, I bring you the very best patios in Vancouver for enjoying craft beer. The list starts with larger patios and beer menus and goes on down to smaller (but no less enjoyable) venues, with smaller beer menus. Only the heat and the hours available to you will limit your time on these patios, so there is no rating system in this round of reviews. Enjoy! Patio drinking tips: Look for session ales—those tasty lower alcohol beers that enable you to spend a long ‘session’ on a patio. Drink water! Go for a rinse cycle after every beer; your body will love you for it. Keep your drink out of the sunlight—no one likes a beer t...

dead frog

dead frog brewery does a major overhaul of its beers jan zeschky calls it dead frog's second coming i think its more like the third or fourth, but who's counting? "Dead Frog is dead. Long live Dead Frog!" i think we all knew it was just a matter of time before brewmaster tony dewald turned that place around er, well, we hoped anyway! and it sure looks like tony has succeeded where several other brewers before him did not no more pepper lime, no more mandarin no more anything except for the nut brown (which i have a very soft spot for - it was the first bc craft beer i had that resonated with me enough to make me search out more local brews and end up here, your humble blogger and beer blatherer - and i may or may not have a dead frog inspired beer tattoo commemorating that life-changing a-ha moment) no more clear glass sleemanesque bottles its a whole new world! i can't help rooting for dead frog even when they went down so many misguided paths th...

tap and barrel in olympic village in vancouver is not officially open yet but they have been soft-opening for over a week now which is kinda cool - you get to tell them what you think of everything and the servers are all very willing to go and find out the answers to all of your questions and believe me, i asked a whole lotta questions! tap and barrel features all local bc products food, beer and wine the beer and the wine are on tap yes, you read that correctly - wine on tap ! peanut butter and bacon jelly make several appearances on the current menu apparently they believe that peanut butter is a great way to show off locally sourced food why not? i began with the pretzel, because i love a pretzel normally only served with one sauce (your choice of mustard, beer & cheese or pb and bacon jelly) i got them to give me a second sauce because i need cheese and mustard to properly enjoy a pretzel the beer and cheese sauce is amazing!  the mustard is must...

drink local, eat local

one of the joys of craft beer is that it encourages folks to drink locally produced beer so if you're on that bandwagon how about jumping on the eating local bandwagon too? and make it organic too, where possible look, even doctors agree! avoid over-processing, fructose and gmos support your local (organic) farmer! and, from my lovely naturopath, a handy guide to which fruits and veggies are most important to purchase organic, and which ones you can get away with purchasing regularly - to help stretch your grocery dollars: Shoppers Guide To Pesticides Sometimes we cannot afford to purchase all of our fruit and veggies organic. beer run

i got tapped to do the office beer run this week apparently word is out that i like beer, like a lot the 80 year old consultant suggested that i try some of those local smaller breweries - he's heard that they are producing some nice beers give me the firm credit card and i'll be happy to support those local smaller breweries! (heck i'll do it on my own dime too, but shhhh, don't tell the office that!) and what, you might ask, did i buy? well... i went to the government store on bute at alberni which, while it is a "signature" store still doesn't have that great a selection for a beer geek like me but frankly, the selection is more than good enough to bring something a little different to the happy office folks granville island raspberry wheat ale (6) steamwhistle pilsner (6) phillips hop circle (6) phillips mixer pack (12) - blue buck, phoenix lager, slipstream cream and coffee stout cannery mixer pack (6) - ipa, naramata brown and anarchy ...

green your pub

Image
a green pub in new york??? stolen from treehugger : "How Eco-Friendly is Your Favorite Pub? Greening the local tavern is easier than ever.   by Mickey Z   There are no shortage of naysayers ready to rain on anyone's green parade. "It's too expensive." "There's no market." "It's just a fad." Fortunately, there are dedicated entrepreneurs like Ruairi Curtin who'd rather make green dreams come true. Ever since Curtin moved from Ireland to my home turf of Astoria ten years ago, he's wanted to open a bar with a local vibe. "I often found myself sitting at home in the evening looking to go locally to have a beer," says Curtin, "but I could never find a bar that made me feel at home—a place to hang my hat, saddle up to the bar, and meet like minded, good people." Not one to wait idly, Curtin opened two bars in Manhattan—Bua on St Mark's Place in the East Village and Wilfie & Nell on West 4th S...

beer snobbery

i am turning into quite the beer snob! drinking craft beer has made me not want to drink anything but the best which is making it hard to visit many of my old haunts and me less likely to be enthusiastic about trying some new places their beer lists just aren't inspiring so, my snobbery aside, how hard is it to bring in one or two local craft brews? it shouldn't be that hard... and it would please me to no end! i'm tired of granville island and okanagan springs being my only two "local" choices and corona and stella being the "imports" sadly, this critique extends to several pubs who pride themselves on having several taps as well but how inspiring is a choice of local taps that only include granville island, big rock, sleeman, okanagan springs and keith's?  i.e. the charlatan:  "Located in the heart of Vancouver's Commercial Drive, The Charlatan, is the areas best Gastro-Pub. Offering 15 fresh tap beers with 12 imported brews...

Happy Earth Day!

today is earth day yesterday was administrative professionals day two damned fine reasons to celebrate with a beer or six! conserve water - drink beer! while that sentiment might not actually be environmentally sound, you can be green about your beer (in ways other than literally drinking green beer on st. paddy's day).  the easiest way?  drink locally - walk or bike to your neighbourhood pub and drink the craft-brewed draught that only had to travel across town to get to your glass.  and have a couple while you're there supporting your local community, to reward yourself for such p.c. behaviour!
