stateside craft

Image
quietly opening on commercial drive last week, stateside craft is the newest craft beer bar in the city portland craft's younger, over-achieving sister will officially open on july 4th but until then, they are soft launching and you can stop in for some wonderful brews and yummy food located in the former avanti's pub in il mercato mall at gravely and commercial it is a whole lot prettier inside than the former pub the female-identified bathroom is 8 million times nicer (thank dog!) bright (or as bright as a place with only a couple of windows can be), polished, open and airy this ain't avanti's, that's for sure and i couldn't be happier now, don't get me wrong, avanti's did me right for many years but their refusal to get any craft beer on tap led me to move my commercial drive beer drinking to st. augustine's as soon as that alternative presented itself now that st. a's has line-ups all the time, i've been jonesing for anoth...

hooker's green?

Hooker's Green at the New Oxford - Now Open If you follow the newly fabricated winding raw metal staircase down from the library at the New Oxford, you will be greeted by the dimly lit games area of the newest addition to the Donnelly Group Public Houses, Hooker's Green. Not to be mistaken with ladies of the night, Hooker¹s Green takes its name from a unique shade of green, created by 18th century botanical artist William J. Hooker. The space is complimented by a large covered patio, a massive wooden bar, its own library and of course a well-stocked and stimulating cocktail and beer menu. Open seven days a week from 4pm, Hooker's Green offers a menu of locally sourced modern pub fare and a selection of 14 rotating craft beers on tap. malones

Image
malones is going crafty! yup, its true they're in the process of putting in oodles of taps and filling them with craft beer currently, there are 22 different beer flavours on tap and their bottle list is a gooder too! ryan told us about it, so bridget and i stopped in there on saturday afternoon to check it out and we were not disappointed i had an acme ipa and bridget tried this little number and we got our drinks on the house because the bar tender said that anyone who was taking photos of the menus and taps was a friend of his! finally this whole beer blogging thing pays a dividend!! it is really great to see another pub embracing craft beer so fiercely! good job and you know i'll be back...

city beer

Image
city beer is a beer store extraordinaire in san francisco located on folsom between 7th and 8th city beer features a gazillion craft beers from all over the world and several taps to drink from while you shop! just check out the incredible selection of beers on offer: like a kid in a candy shop its rebecca in city beer store! i think i am in love with the stillwater labels must investigate this brewery more thoroughly... and these were the beers they had on tap when i was there (june 23rd...): we tried the lagunitas, the allagash, the drakes and the lambic not each one, just one each! i am trying the lambic in this photo, ordered by alison i ordered the lagunitas double ipa, which she is holding in this photo i guess alex lapped us cuz his black ipa looks empty... (not pictured is stacey, who had the allagash) it was a wonderful atmosphere everyone was smiling and chatting and getting drinks we were drinking while we perused the shelves it w...

san francisco

ooooh, this sounds like the beer store i need to visit in san francisco this coming weekend city beer store on folsom street check out that beer list! and it looks like i might get a brewery tour at 21st amendment i'll be at the pub/brewery on thursday afternoon! (thought i'd kill the bit of time i have been arriving and my friend getting off work imbibing the back in black, hop crisis and over hopulation, all of which are on tap today... hopefully still on thursday!) "Hi Rebecca, Thanks for your note. Because we are a full service restaurant, there is always a brewer or a manger available that can potentially give small groups brewery tours. We often do impromptu tours provided we are not too busy--mid-afternoon is a good time for this. I recommend you call ahead to the pub to set up a time for a guaranteed tour. Their phone number is (415) 369-0900 Thanks for thinking of us and Cheers! Craft Beer in a can. Better for the beer. Better for the environment...

citra ipa

Image
i love the dead frog citra ipa yes, oh yes i do! it makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside just like a good hoppy beer should and for that i am eternally grateful! i have had this elixir on tap at places like st. augustine's and purchased the big ole bottles from specialty beer stores and i like it all! the bottle says: 6.5% dead frog citra ipa is a high hopped, high alcohol, high bitterness true ipa that is like an invigorating open handed slap of citrus awesomeness!!! you hold in your hands the pinnacle of brewing innovation.  beermaster series is a harmonious combination of premium quality beer and ingenious flavour design.  we bestow upon you the finest beer in the universe!  cheers! i'm bummed that it is only a limited release but i guess they sure did leave me wanting more! and i hear that maybe, just maybe it will be popular enough to make it into regular rotation is my love strong enough?? for the brewed awakening story on the citra ipa, click he...

kudos

from the camra newsletter: At last year's Vancouver Home Brewing Awards Matt Anderson and Danny Seeton took the Best in Show award for their 'Rocket to Russia' bourbon oak-aged Imperial Stout, and as part of their award they've brewed a full 14000 litre batch of this beer with Yaletown Brewing brewmaster Iain Hill. After spending over a month and a half conditioning, Rocket to Russia will go on tap this Thursday at Yaletown Brewing. Matt, Danny, and Iain describe this 10.5% abv Imperial Stout as being very smooth with a distinctive American oak flavour reminiscent of new world red wines. Matt, Danny, and Iain will be on hand for the launch at this Thursday's cask event. i hear that the launch went really well and that you can still try the rocket to russia - so get on over there and try some!! way to go guys!

round two!

Image
last weekend i had the opportunity to try a couple of beers again - yay! as part of anna's and my tasting afternoon on friday, we went with the tin whistle black widow ale i thought this would be a good one since anna likes the dark beers, but not the terribly hoppy ones i already knew i liked it, would it be a good choice for anna? you better believe it - she liked it too! black as night and opaque as treacle this truly is a mild ale very nicely roasty malty not much on the hop side, nor the thick and creamy side this one is just a very drinkable black ale i could drink it all day i tell ya! on saturday night at timbre while everyone else was eating the elk and playing with the kangaroo balls bottle opener, i had the elysian immortal ipa again its not the hoppiest ipa on the block but it is quite a lovely brew floral and aromatic and bitter delicious! i must admit that I did happily move on to the red racer ipa to finish the night though i am a very...
