new release

well, a re-release actually... and they quote me! Dead Frog Brewery Re-Releases the Taste of BC: Big Stump Spruce Golden Ale Aldergrove, BC — Dead Frog Brewery is pleased to announce the re-release of its Big Stump Spruce Golden Ale. Inspired by forays into the old growth forests of British Columbia, this 6.5% golden ale incorporates Sitka spruce tips harvested a mere 10 minutes away from our brewery. Jan Zeschky of The Province mused, "It’d be pretty special if this beer style one day became an appellation and tourists came to the province to try spruce ale like wine purists flock to Burgundy." Considering the first beer made in BC was a spruce ale brewed by Captain Cook in Nootka Sound, we agree. Big Stump's rich sweetness from Cara and Maris Otter malts balances the bitterness of Simcoe and Northern Brewer hops whose pine notes are heightened by the spring growth of tender spruce tips for a truly unique pint. "I wanted to bring out a bit more of t...

firefly tasting

Image
i attended the "evolution of the ipa" tasting at firefly last week i was so excited that they were having a whole night of ipas! and i wasn't disappointed there were only two ipas on the list that i hadn't yet tried (one because its limited release and the other because it was only just released) but that meant that i could focus more easily on comparing and contrasting the hops varieties, strengths and malt balances between the beers we got lots of great hand-outs a hops profile chart, a beer evaluation sheet, the history of ipas and a beer aroma wheel not to mention all the great information our fearless leaders had to impart i feel like i got a lot more than just a tasting we began the night with samuel smith's india ale (5%) from england this is one that i had tried just the night before and not liked i found it had a biscuity nose and felt kind of belgian but the further i got down my taster glass of this semi-traditional british ipa, the more ...

Rogue's Brutal Bitter

Image
while at hidden the other night, my tastebuds were tingled by Rogue Brewery's Brutal Bitter. it pours with an awful lot of head, and stays a bit hazy even after it warms up a little.  offered in 650mL bottles, it didn't say what its alcohol volume was, but judging by our lack of addle-brainedness, we figured it wasn't outrageously high!  15 degrees plato, 59 IBUs, 14.2 degrees Lovibond and just 7 ingredients:  100% floor-malted maris otter, cara vienna, cara wheat malts; crystal and rogue farm willamette hops, free range coastal waters and top fermenting pacman yeast.  no chemicals, preservatives or additives.  suggested food pairings are beef and bbq. they say:  "Dedicated to Justin Fisch, the "Shade Man".  An imperial style bitter using exotic traditional floor malts, a hoppy citrus flavor with a stupendous hop aroma.  Hedonistic!" definitely has a hop aroma, its smooth and very easy-drinking.  not particularly bitter and makes a g...
