beer culture

mother jones on the big boys versus the microbreweries , statistics-wise

quote of the day

"The way we brew, whatever raw material we use is there because we want the flavours that it brings to the beer.  What the big brewers tend to do, is they've gone down a road of, dare I say, removing flavour from the beer... They add things like rice and maize to give them the sugar that provides the alcohol without adding flavour.  If you listen to their ads, they tell you that their beer tastes cold.  They say the beer tastes crisp.  They don't say it tastes malty or hoppy or you taste the fruitiness of the yeast, all that kind of thing." Rick Dellow quoted in the Vancouver Courier September 17, 2010

quote of the day

"Microbrewing in B.C. has never been easy, but the makers of craft beer are enjoying a growing thirst for their product.  And not just beer nerds are sampling craft and cask beers at places like the Alibi Room.  Most of the events at the first Vancouver Craft Beer Week this spring sold old, as did last year's Hopscotch whisky, scotch and beer festival in Vancouver.  Fifty-five hundred people attended Nando's Canada Cup of Beer at the University of B.C. over two days in July where, organizers say, half the vendors were microbreweries.  And craft beer enthusiasts reportedly snapped up tickets to last weekend's Great Canadian Beer Festival in Victoria in 10 minutes." r&b hoppelganger

Image
oh the r & b hoppelganger what a lovely local ipa and a great way to get my hop fix i was reminded of my love for this brew at wild rice the other night i was there for a wedding reception and the host bar offered keiths or sleemans honey so that's what i drank until they ran out once i was on my own, i very happily switched to the ipa nothing makes me happier than an ipa especially an aggressively hopped ipa my night ended well! so well in fact that i decided to have another hoppelganger the other afternoon sitting outside on the deck in the october sunshine in a tank top sipping hoppelganger with a good friend what a great way to spend a couple of hours! from the bottle: "rick and barry (r&b) invite you to try our hoppelganger india pale ale.  we created our ipa for beer lovers who appreciate an assertively hopped brew.  well-balanced with a skillful combination of five hop varieties and premium english malt, hoppelganger has the generous flavour a...

beer fact of the day

is it true that granville island brewing was canada's first microbrewery when it opened in 1984? jan zeschky said so in the province, so it must be true but can you blame me for being incredulous? incredulous that gib was the first and incredulous that it happened when i was 15 and it took me so long to discover microbrews! but wait!  howe sound says on their website that john mitchell and frank appleton started the first craft brewery in north america in 1980, in horseshoe bay... so you tell me which was first?  how many more years have i lived without knowing the joys of craft brewed beers?

changing beer culture

Image
stolen from npr : Changing Tastes Drive Shift In Beer Sales by Wendy Kaufman "Americans drink a lot of beer during the summer. But beer drinking habits are changing. People are drinking less and drinking differently. Sales of some of the big-name brands are down, and the major brewers are fighting back with big marketing campaigns. At The Spot Off Main in Bellevue, Wash. — a neighborhood place for billiards and beer — the No. 1 selling U.S. brand, Bud Light, is on tap. But assistant manager John Stevens says his bartenders are pouring less of it than they used to. "Everyone's budget went down. That includes their entertainment dollars when they go out to drink in bars," he says. A lot of young men — some of beer's biggest fans — have lost their jobs in the down economy. And some are skipping bars altogether in favor of drinking at home. But those sales, at least of the premium and high-profit brands, are also down. Last year, the Beer Institute repor...
