vancouver craft beer week

Image
my liver is happy that vcbw is over for another year the rest of me is a little relieved too - so many good times and good beers, but a person's gotta sleep! i may have only made it to a few events but those events were of the all you can drink persuasion and i do take the list as a personal challenge to complete i have already given my low-down on the business of craft beer so i will begin my vcbw list with the opening night last friday i was volunteering, so there wasn't much drinking at all for me holding this event at a nightclub (gossip) was great from a couple of standpoints:  the performance space was in the same room so there was no need for anyone to have to choose between beer and the show; all the breweries were pouring their beers from an actual bar with access to water so there was no running out of rinse water; and the club provided plenty of different areas, including several with seating, to get away from the fray somehow though, it still manage...

cbc website

Image
and i made the cbc website again!!! As people around the world embrace craft beer, beer travel is a growing trend. We do it for wine,  why not beer, asks Rebecca Whyman, a member of Campaign for Real Ale. Whyman says she would love to travel more often for beer — but when going to every beer festival worldwide is not in your budget, she say you can still get some decent craft beer on your holidays. Whyman recommends starting with some research on the Internet to find out which breweries are near your destination, and what events are taking place while you're there. She says a recent trip of hers to Mexico produced some delicious results, and on an upcoming trip she will be going to the Las Vegas Beer Fest. Before you arrive, you can plug into the local beer scene, and start following beer makers on social media. Travel the world tasting beer (CBC)   Beer Advocate is a beer magazine and website that can help you find craft beer locales in cities throughout the...

beer column

my notes from yesterday's beer column on beer travel on cbc radio one's on the coast with stephen quinn I would love to be able to travel the world for beer! So far, Mexico and Central Ontario are the furthest I have travelled since becoming a beer geek, and those were places I was visiting for other reasons. Those totally count as beer travel though, since I sought out all the beer I could while I was there! There are two basic methods of beer travel. The first is to find a beer event you would like to attend, or choose a beer-centric place to visit, and then plan a vacation around the beer. The second is to research the beer options available in a place you already have plans to visit. So far my beer travel generally falls into the second category. I find all the beer I can at places I already have plans to visit. Quite often serendipity graces me with a beer festival during the very period I need to be somewhere. For instance the Washington State Cask Festival that ...

legacy liquor store

new and exciting beers at legacy liquor store in vancouver: Hopworks “Organic” Ace of Spades Imperial IPA- $13.35 This hopped out beast has Amarillo, Cascade and Centennial hops added at every point – mash tun, first wort, kettle and dry hop – and all this green goodness results in a beer with a huge citrus hop aroma, flavour and deep clean bitterness. Evan Doan | Beer Team | Legacy Liquor Store Anderson Valley “Wild Turkey” Bourbon Barrel Stout- $12.85 Complexity. Aged for three months in Wild Turkey Bourbon barrels, this luxurious stout has a deep ebony hue and a beautiful mahogany head. The woody, vanilla-like notes imparted by the barrels mingle with aromas of fresh baked bread, toffee and espresso, enveloping the rich chocolate and roasted barley flavours with a fine bourbon character. Chris Bonnallie | Beer Supervisor | Legacy Liquor Store Powell Street/Four Winds DunkelWeizen Collaboration - $7.55 When two breweries come together magic can happen, and this fun collaborati...

beer notes

these are my beer notes from last night's beer column on cbc radio's on the coast with stephen quinn: Its dark and cold out these days - which means people are more likely to be sitting down to heartier fare like soups, stews and casseroles for dinner.  Beer makes a great addition to all of those.  Beer provides body and rich flavours to dishes.  You can make a very easy beer and cheese soup by just adding a bottle of beer to boiling stock, simmer it for an hour and then add some nice cheese just before you serve it.  For a stew or casserole, just substitute beer for some of the liquid and you've upped the flavour content.  If you're making pulled pork in the slow cooker, add beer!  Marinade your meat in beer.  Reduce the beer and use it in sauces and gravies. If you want proper recipes of how to use beer in your cooking there are plenty floating around on the internet, including on beer websites such as craftbeer.com .  They have soups, m...

legacy liquor store

new and exciting beers at legacy liquor store in vancouver: Brooklyn Black Ops - $37.25 A robust stout aged in bourbon barrels for four months, bottled flat, and re-fermented with champagne yeast. This beer has chocolate and coffee notes, with highlights of vanilla-like oak notes. HUB Abominable Winter Ale - $9.75 Brewed with Cascade, Centennial and Chinook hops and six organic malts. This winter ale has a complex floral, spicy and citrus hoppiness backed by the right amount of sweetness from the malt. Delirium Nocturnum - $4.45 A dark brown beer with an aroma consisting of caramel, mocha, coriander and liquorice. These aromas follow through in the flavour of the beer in addition to the traditional flavours you would find in a dark belgian beer.

bc craft beer month

Image
its only the first week of craft beer week and maybe its because i'm getting over my man-cold but i feel like its been all beer all the time for me so far! monday i skipped the craziness of st. augustine's sartori cask night for the calm of monday night football at a friend's house, with me supplying the beers which included an ipa homebrewed by matt, rod and ryan's that was needing to be drunk before it lost all its hoppy goodness, a true northwest ipa that went down far too well! tuesday i went to two cask nights the railway club had a lovely r&b ipa cask very satisfyingly delicious rogue broadway had their very first cask night, also with an r&b cask blueberry cranberry esb, which their front office person, lundy dale, who is also the president of camra bc, helped to brew and was thrilled to unveil at the start of bc craft beer month wednesday was my usual beernesday club night at st. augustine's omg, the cheese stromboli currently on their...

best beers

dying to know which beers mens journal thinks are the top 25 ? can't say that i consider them to be experts... but you know what?  they seem to have done alright as far as i'm concerned: russian river, dogfish head, sierra nevada, 21st amendment, dieu du ciel, hopworks, ninkasi, hitachino, mikkeller, nogne (my list would have a couple more canadian brews on there though...)

portland

my long weekend in portland was fabulous! (even if the weather was less than stellar) this time around i managed to make it to deschutes, hopworks, gigantic, burnside, cascade, and old town breweries, plus a couple of other drinking establishments offering the lovely craft beer i took bolt bus to get there and back and definitely got my $68 worth its not totally dreamy though... the seats may have a little extra leg room, but they're leather so you spend the whole ride trying not to slide off the seat the wifi connection isn't very fast, apparently only works well at the front of the bus and until they change the routers, does not work at all while you're in canada we were not called by group as they say on the website, so even though we were there when the driver had told us to be, he had already loaded everyone else and we had trouble finding seats together - so be early, even earlier than the driver tells you to be! the departure and arrival times were not idea...

cask night

Image
last night's cask at the yaletown brewpub was their pale ale dry-hopped with cascades and it was a good one! rumour has it there's a stout cask coming up... because it was martini night (and that's not my scene) we left yaletown for rogue wetbar and more beer because we follow rogue on twitter we got to try one of their new beer cocktails for free! i love free! and i love a bellini, so i went for the beerlini pyramid apricot beer with bellini slush it makes for a murky drink, but damn, its delicious! then i had to have a pint of the hopworks abominable winter ale because they still had some available at rogue as their rotating tap guess it isn't officially spring for a couple more days...

beernesday

Image
at last night's beernesday the number of beers i needed to try was overwhelming that is why i thank dog every day that the taster paddle was invented! the star of the night for me was the two beers brewing evolutionary ipa elysian brewing rapture heather ale - 7.6%  a pound per barrel of high country heather tips in both the mash and toward the end of the boil give rapture floral and piney notes very floral, but oh so drinkable, definitely get some before its gone! elysian brewing idiot sauvin ipa - 6.3%  an ipa both fiercely fruity and floral, made with new zealand nelson sauvin hops. strong citrus and passion fruit aroma and flavor it is very floral, and bitter, and i'm just not sure how i feel about it.  possibly love, possibly indifference.  i look forward to trying a whole bottle of this brew to decide! two beers brewing evolutionary ipa - 6.2%  a dry hopped, deep copper coloured ipa brewed with yakima valley simcoe, amarillo and centennial hops...

biercraft and firefly

Image
i spent my lunch hour today at firefly and biercraft success at firefly!  bit of fail at biercraft :( shopping with shans at firefly my hoppy haul biercraft has a new lunch menu and were offering $2 lunches between 11:30 and 1:30 today, plus a $2 coupon for your next lunch visit, meaning that your net spending would end up being zero a free lunch who doesn't want a free lunch? alas, because of the deal they were not able to make substitutions or deletions to their menu items and this vegetarian who isn't eating cheese these days was shit outta luck on menu items bummer but on the bright side, i made it back to work on time! i'm surprised there weren't more people in there taking advantage of the special, but then again, i only heard about it at about 11 this morning...

beernesday

Image
its good to be back in vancouver well, from a beer aspect anyway! tuesday night i attended the railway's cask night and very much enjoyed the r&b cranberry ipa not heavy on the cranberry, it was refreshing and would make a great summer patio beer (lord my phone cam takes lousy photos... must learn to use the new camera toot sweet!) wednesday night i stopped in at the new oxford to take advantage of the deschutes tap takeover and have me some inversion ipa before heading off to st. augustine's for beernesday.  delicious, and great camra vancouver company too! at st. augustine's i kept with the deschutes theme and had me a red chair northwest pale ale (6.2% the citrus punch of a big ipa, minus the one-dimensional hop sledgehammer.  seven select european and domestic malts round out the edges for a complex, copper-coloured brew) and my go-to winter favourite the hopworks abominable winter ale good times, good beers, good friends yeah, i guess its pretty good...

beernesday

i began beernesday last night with two martinis i love the holiday season! anyway, after my after-work-schmoozey-do i dutifully headed off to st. augustine's to imbibe in craft beer i love craft beer! lagunitas sucks holiday ale - 7.9%  a "cereal medley" of barley, rye, wheat and oats.  full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.85% abv, then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor i love when they joyously dry-hop my beer! and i am in love with this beer - so much hoppy goodness, so many grains - i may have found my new breakfast of champions... seriously, loved it so much i had to have a whole pint after my taster tree spiced reserve ale - 7.5%  brewed using a special blend of brewer's spices special indeed! no vanilla in sight, just subtle spices all blending nicely on the tongue this is the tree winter ale i will choose to drink from now on (no vertical vanilla for me!) rogue yellow snow ipa - 6.2%  pale...

cask nights

no photos because i was a bonehead last week and kept forgetting my camera! tuesday night at the railway club featured granville island's belgian wit me, i don't like a belgian, so i just had a wee dram to taste very yeasty, very coriandery couldn't get past those to the orange that i am assured was underneath them! definitely a wit pleased the wit lovers in the crowd gave me an excuse to have the central city esb! thursday night at yaletown brewpub featured the seasonal esb dry-hopped with cascades i was coming down with a cold by this point in the week so can only be so reliable on taste and smell! but the hopes made it through my stuffed up head and danced on my palate which is bloody impressive - two thumbs up! saturday at the railway club featured a cask-off between esbs from central city and hopworks the portland timber's army were in town for some footie action and they brought the hub cask up with them i love me some hopworks, but found the ca...
