link love

this week's link love is all about ab-inbev buying 10 barrel brewing wall street journal beervana beer advocate the jax beer guy yahoo finance brewbound washington beer blog bend bulletin the portland mercury portland business journal and related story from may me, i think that it's a shame when craft breweries sell themselves to duopolies like ab-inbev sure it's a good move for the owners to sell to the big guys but it rarely means the beer will remain the same artisinal product look at goose island that was supposed to be brewed small scale and only change its distribution after being taken over by ab-inbev but i haven't been totally impressed by their beer that came my way recently (the ipa that i had in vegas as it was the closest to craft choice at the bellagio) so colour me annoyed at 10 barrel for taking away one of my favourite ipas, the apocalypse (which is currently a 96 on ratebeer.com )

beer column

here are my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio's on the coast:   There is no absolute definition of craft beer, but most of the industry and consumers agree that craft beer is brewed with quality ingredients, by a brewery owned by people rather than other companies and that produces a smaller amount of beer annually.   The Brewers Association   defines American craft brewers as " small, independentand traditional ": "small" is defined as an "annual production of 6 million barrels of beer or less"; "independent" is defined as at least 75% owned or controlled by a craft brewer; and "traditional" is defined as brewing in which at least 50% of the beer's volume consists of "traditional or innovative" ingredients.   Most people agree that craft beer is artisanal vs. mass-produced. Crafty beer is the name beer advocates have been giving to beers that are pretending to be craft beers.   These are beer...

stadium beer

Image
stupid bc place signed a five year exclusive deal with budweiser maybe its time to not drink at football games?? in the meantime however, at empire stadium they have those crazy quick bottom filling beer thingies you know the ones, surely you've seen the youtube videos ... i too have video, but don't know how to embed it here... must research that anyway, there are two budweiser stands at empire, one outside of each end zone where you can get a 24oz budweiser poured for you from the bottom in seconds flat there's a magnet in the bottom of the glass to keep the beer in the darned cup but as bridget demonstrates, it is not fool-proof if you push on the bottom of your cup, beer will fall out i was very excited to get my bottom-filled beer novelty is fun however, i discovered how quickly that novelty wears off when you now have a $12 24oz budweiser to drink blech!

chelada

trust anheuser busch to have taken a lovely mexican idea and, well, taken it i have been known to extol the virtues of a true mexican michelada as it is the beer version of the caesar and probably most refreshing in hot weather but i find the concept of ruining perfectly good beer with clamato not something i am likely to do shans is heading to sasquatch this weekend and is overwhelmingly excited to be stopping at american walmart on her way to stock up on the bud chelada i cringe but hope for her sake it is all that she has dreamed of, and then some (i mean maybe the clamato will make the budweiser actually palatable...)
