the short piece about growlers on the cbc website : Craft beer growlers stir up controversy among beer drinkers Beer enthusiasts debate the best method for buying local craft beer By On the Coast, CBC News Posted: Apr 01, 2015 6:59 AM PT Last Updated: Apr 01, 2015 6:59 AM PT A growler is a common way to buy fresh beer from a local brewery. beer column

my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio one's on the coast with michelle eliot: ( listen to the audio here ) Geoff Turner (a producer at CBC) tweeted last week that he thinks growlers are “a really stupid way to buy your beer”.   In a twitter exchange with beer advocate Rick Green (@BCbrews) he called growlers “trendy silliness”.   Rick pulled me into the fray so I decided to do my beer column about growlers, and other ways to enjoy fresh beer. Growlers have been around for centuries, originally in the guise of a lidded pail, but are definitely enjoying their 15 minutes of fame right now.   10 years ago only beer geeks knew what they were.   Now you’d be hard pressed to find anyone in the Lower Mainland who doesn’t.   There’s nothing like drinking fresh beer – before it loses flavour or becomes spoiled. If you can’t be drinking the beer right at the brewery, then growlers are a great way to transport that fresh beer to where you will be drin...

beer column

my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio's on the coast with gloria macarenko: The days are getting longer, the weather is getting warmer – the conditions are perfect for a “brewery stroll”.   I use the term “stroll” rather than “crawl” to get away from the concept of a drunken, and usually messy, contest to drink the most beer at the most places in the least amount of time.   And also to differentiate it from a brewery tour.   A brewery stroll could definitely include a brewery tour or two - the stroll is about taking your time and exploring a neighbourhood or area of town via its tasting rooms and craft beer pubs. Run: There is at least one running group in Vancouver that runs to breweries, pubs and restaurants ( East Van Run Crew ).   It’s a very efficient use of time to fit in a work out during social drinking – not to mention a way to net out your calories at zero! Cycle: If you’re going to be filling growlers, though, you might prefer ...

from the cbc website, my column ! 4 B.C. craft beer changes to look forward to in 2015 More growth predicted for the already booming craft beer industry in B.C. By On the Coast, CBC News Posted: Jan 09, 2015 7:42 AM PT Last Updated: Jan 09, 2015 12:51 PM PT B.C. craft beer fans can expect even more breweries to open in 2015 Beer columnist Rebecca Whyman on B.C. craft beer predictions for 2015 6:59 On the Coast beer columnist Rebecca Whyman says even though 2014 was one of the best years yet for the B.C. craft beer industry, there's still plenty to look forward to in 2015. Here are four changes B.C. craft beer fans should expect: More breweries Dogwood Brewing should be opening in the next two weeks near S.E. Marine and Knight Street in Vancouver. It's an organic brewery and will be offering IPA, honey ale and stout. Off the Rail Brewing will be opening their doors at the beginning of ...

beer column

my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio's on the coast with stephen quinn (and the link to the audio ): 2014 was an incredible year for craft beer in BC.   So many new breweries opened (21) and none have gone under yet.   I’m not sure 2015 can match that kind of growth, but I do know that three breweries are poised to open in Vancouver in the first three months of 2015. Dogwood Brewing with Claire Wilson at the helm should be opening in the next two weeks at 8284 Sherbrook Street .   Off the Rail Brewing on Adanac Street right across from Bomber Brewing is hoping to open their doors at the beginning of February and Red Truck Brewing’s long awaited tasting room at 295 East 1 st Avenue should be opening March 15 th . Dogwood Brewing is an organic brewery and will be offering IPA, Honey Ale and Stout when it opens near SE Marine and Knight Streets.   Follow them on Facebook (Dogwood Brewing) and Twitter (@DogwoodBrew) for word of the official openin...

further evidence that it is good to be me a lot of the time (please see the above as an exercise in appreciation, not better-than-thouing): i attended a lovely soirée at the new steamworks brewery in burnaby on tuesday evening just two blocks east of boundary road, it's almost in vancouver! the new brewery has been cranking out beer for a while now and the tasting room has been serving up growlers and tasters for a couple of weeks but it doesn't feel officially opened until there's a party, right? on offer were tasters of four steamworks beers paired with appies incorporating the beer into the recipe: pilsner with shrimp and corn on potatoes jasmine ipa with pork steam buns wheat with duck confit and frambozen with cream puffs plus tours of the brewery (i got to lay eyes on all the pretty tanks and the centrifuge) it sure is pretty in there - both the brewery and the tasting room just check out this lovely wall in the tasting room:   not dest...

beer column

my notes from yesterday's on the coast beer column on cbc radio one, with stephen quinn wherein we drank driftwood's pilsner doehnel and chatted about beer gear The craft beer boom is having quite the trickle down effect.  Sure there are new breweries opening up every day, but brewers aren't the only ones benefitting from the attention on craft beer these days.  Everyone associated with the industry is booming.  And with a boom come innovations!   Beer Gear: The rising number of breweries with tasting lounges and growler filling stations mean that more growlers are being produced. Everyone has their own branded ones, including breweries and groups like CAMRA. There are more than just glass growlers available however. 33 Acres carries ceramic growlers when they can keep them in stock and Hyrdoflask makes double walled, vacuum sealed, insulated stainless steel growlers, which will keep liquids cold for up to 24 hours or hot for up to 12. That's right, it'...
