dying to know which beers mens journal thinks are the top 25 ? can't say that i consider them to be experts... but you know what?  they seem to have done alright as far as i'm concerned: russian river, dogfish head, sierra nevada, 21st amendment, dieu du ciel, hopworks, ninkasi, hitachino, mikkeller, nogne (my list would have a couple more canadian brews on there though...)

i spent my lunch hour today at firefly and biercraft success at firefly!  bit of fail at biercraft :(  shopping with shans at firefly my hoppy haul biercraft has a new lunch menu and were offering $2 lunches between 11:30 and 1:30 today, plus a $2 coupon for your next lunch visit, meaning that your net spending would end up being zero a free lunch who doesn't want a free lunch? alas, because of the deal they were not able to make substitutions or deletions to their menu items and this vegetarian who isn't eating cheese these days was shit outta luck on menu items bummer but on the bright side, i made it back to work on time! i'm surprised there weren't more people in there taking advantage of the special, but then again, i only heard about it at about 11 this morning...

and no, i'm not actually talking about the weather! sierra nevada kills one seasonal in favour of a new one lagunitas runs out of room to brew their winter seasonal and comes up with a replacement buh-bye old favourites and hello fabulous newness? not sure we'll get the new seasonal brews up here, but i do hope so

had me a sampler the other night (ha, more like a week and a half ago...) at st. augustine's and so did amanda i went with hopworks' organic rise-up red, bear republic's peter brown tribute ale, lagunitas undercover investigation shut-down ale and sierra nevada's pale ale i loooved the undercover ale - bitter but not in that amazing northwest ipa way, it was actually kinda sweet, like brown sugar malty hoppy, which sounds like a weird combo but it was very much working for me! the sierra nevada is not the hoppiest pale ale, but definitely more hops than some of my friends would like! the rise-up red is a full-bodied wonderfully hoppy number, and i really like it! the peter brown tribute ale was malty as f*ck, roasty but not too sweet - molasses yay! very nice addition to my sampler!

one last post about hopscotch 2010! i was lucky enough to be given a ticket to attend an invite only seminar on "history of deschutes and what the future holds" which involved getting several tasters of jubilale and hop trip while listening to the very entertaining lance mitchell, marketing manager for deschutes some of the high points: the jubilale was intended to run out between christmas and new year's but its so popular that it will be sold out by around december 6th so if you want some for christmas, you'd best be picking it up now! deschutes was founded in 1988 in bend, oregon by gary fish, who wanted to serve local foods and local beers to the locals it wasn't an easy road getting to where they are today 21 years ago all the beer got contaminated and they had to pour all of it out on christmas day and start over their new brew system is german it is 28 feet wide the road to bend is only 30 feet wide, so they got a police escort deschutes...

okay, this almost makes me wish i had television: dogfish head founder sam calagione has a tv show coming out on discovery channel in january he'll be travelling to breweries to meet the brewers and discuss regionality apparently he told beer advocate that he'll be visiting allagash, stone, victory, russion river, sierra nevada and epic in new zealand i also wanna see inside dogfish as they come up with new recipes... too bad downloading is illegal... beer advocate quotes calagione as saying "beer has always been my passion.  it is so much more than what you see in the glass.  i'm excited to share the diligence, daring and creativity that we pour into our work.  i'm confident that discovery and this show are going to turn a lot more people on to the work of the amazing craft brewers around the world.  i think that will be great for our whole community."
