from dead frog, the weeping reaper blood orange helles bock which they so nicely provided me a sample of and it's good!  i really enjoyed this alternative to pumpkin beers, not just as an alternate but for it's own malty orange self! With the death of summer comes the celebration of autumn and the harvest, a traditional time to gather resources for the dormant winter months. It's also when the spirit world becomes more active. On All Hallows' Eve, ghosts disguised as beggars may come knocking at your door asking for food or money. Turn them away and you risk being cursed or haunted. A jack-o'-lantern placed at your door or in a window will ward off evil spirits. If you dress up as a ghoul, you may trick the Grim Reaper into thinking you are not of the living and avoid his harvesting your soul.   Our Weeping Reaper Blood Orange Helles Bock is a strong ale designed for the transition from summer to winter—stronger for the cooler nights, yet lighter bodied and...

new and exciting beers: Elysian Dark O' The Moon Pumpkin Stout - $12.55 Stout brewed with pumpkin and pumpkin seeds with cinnamon added. Spookily smooth and chocolatey with a touch of cinnamon. It won 2010 GABF Silver Medal in the Field Beer category. Phillips and Great Lakes Brewery Puzzler Belgian Black IPA - $6.35 This beer is the collaborative result of two Canadian craft breweries three provinces apart coming together in Victoria to combine yeast from Belgium with hops from the Pacific Northwest in a rich Black Ale. Whistler Chestnut Ale Limited Edition - $6.50 This limited release is a true reflection of Fall. Blended robust caramel and crystal malts to give the brew deep brown amber hues, for an almost warming appearance. However it's the roasted chestnuts that impart a unique and bold nutty character, complemented by a light level of hops, for a clean yet crisp finish.

total eclipse of the hops and pumpkineater

i got the opportunity to try two of howe sound 's limited edition fall beers at st. augustine's the other day and had to have them again at beernesday! just to make sure i know what i'm talking about... total eclipse of the hops:  "A strong india pale ale brewed with 100% barley, six varieties of hops, water and yeast. Extra barley balances the large volume of hops in this brew. This is definitely for the hop lover. This beer is brewed in limited quantities as part of the John Mitchell series. As a highly hopped specialty this ale goes well with spicy cuisine such as curry and Mexican favorites. Also good with fried foods such as halibut and chip and hot wings." 8% 90 ibus 17 degrees plato comes in the 1L pot-stopper (and on tap at various fabulous establishments) totally worth waiting for - i'm in love with this beer! not totally clear definitely bitter, but not overly hoppy nose why oh why is this only a limited release? i want to drink it ...

pumpkin home brew

next up in the beers paul has home-brewed and let us try is his pumpkin ale. originally brewed after pumpkin harvest time, it was just too young to drink then.  now though, it has aged to a very drinkable little number. its cloudy with lots of sediment, not suprisingly.  subtle pumpkin nose with a large head and good carbonation.  its a darned tasty beer. for me, its just too yeasty to make it something i could drink more than one of at a time, but i was quite happy to settle in with my one! most noble home brew effort!
