freshly stocked at legacy liquor store in vancouver: It all began in 1997 when Bryan and Sayuri Baird quit their jobs and headed to the Pacific Northwest, ground zero for the U.S. craft beer renaissance, to study brewing. Enter 2000, and the Numazu Fishmarket Taproom opens in Tokyo with no customers, just workers, and after six months of local indifference they knew they needed more money to survive. Baird Brewing Company was then incorporated with seed money from friends and family, and in 2003 began to expand the brewery in order to service the thirsty Tokyo market, installing a 250-litre brewing system on the first floor. This marked the dawn of their brand artwork, developed by graphic designer Eiko Nishida, who continues to this day to passionately craft each piece. Brewed to the strength of a dopplebock, this lager uses four different malts in addition to Cascade, Willamette, and Hallertauer Mittelfrueh and Saphir hops. Pouring dark amber in colour with notes of citrus, toasted malt and butterscotch on the nose, aromas that carry through on the palate before fading into a spicy hop finish, this brew is an excellent way to celebrate 25 years. my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio one's on the coast with stephen quinn summer beers: The weather may not bear witness to the fact, but it is summer. That means a whole new season of beers is upon us.    In general terms, summer is the season of the lager. There are many fabulous summer ales available, but summer is the season in which lagers shine. Much maligned in recent history as flavour-less yellow fizzy beer, there are some wonderful craft brewed lagers available to quench your summer thirst. Cold is not a flavour so I would suggest avoiding a beer that advertises that it is. Instead I'd head for a beer that says it is crisp and refreshing and full of flavour. Also synonymous with summer are wheat ales and fruit beers. Lower alcohol percentages are also often found in a summer beer. When its hot out it is less enjoyable to quaff a 9% ale. At 4.8% ABV, this perfectly sparkling pale lager alcohol regularly wins awards both at home and abroad. Parallel 49 Salty Scot Sea Salted Caramel Scotch Ale - $7.55 "We put the kettle on for a long boil and this Scottish wee heavy is what we got." A rich caramel is complemented by sea salt for a complex, intense flavour. How can you go wrong? You Can't. Deschutes Brewery Chasin' Freshies Fresh Hop IPA - $11.35 Like fresh powder, it's a seize the moment type thing. At harvest, we rush Goschie farms cascade hops fresh from bine to kettle. Not any cascades, mind you, but an heirloom strain, from a single field restored from the original rhizome.

Magners Pear Cider - $4.45 Magners Traditional Apple Cider has been such a big hit, we couldn't resist bringing in the delicious Pear Cider made by the very same Irish producer. Porterhouse Oyster Stout - $3.55 A superbly balanced brew, smooth and rounded without being bland. More sweetness derived from fresh oysters shucked into the conditioning tank, what a way to go! But of course not suitable for vegetarians.

i'm off to gcbf but before i go... here are the new and exciting beers at legacy liquor store in vancouver: Eet & Bierlokaal De Molen Licht & Lustig Licht & Lustig, which means 'light and cheerful', is exactly what this delicious golden-coloured ale is! Brewed by Brouwerij de Molen in the Netherlands, this is a great beer for the end of summer.   Tatra Pils Zywiec Brewery in Poland is where this easy drinking refreshing lager hails from. This simple Eastern European style lager is in limited supply so make sure you get this one while quantities last.   Granville Island Brewing Saison The newest limited release from Granville Island's brewmaster Vern is the Belgain Saison. This brew has a fruity characteristic with lower hops and a light malt flavour. Saison, the French word for "season" - is a nod to beers traditionally brewed during the late summer harvest for thirsty farmers.

yup its true, beer has gone to the dogs well, okay, one beer has been brewed for dogs but, um, aren't hops poisonous to dogs? and um, who wants a lurching lurcher? "The concept of a beer brewed for dogs sounds potentially dangerous since hops, alcohol and carbonation are all bad for canine tummies, but Brown insists her pooch pilsners and labrador lagers are safe for dogs and their owners." "Bowser Beer is currently available in more than 40 states and Brown has a team of taste-testing terriers -- among other breeds -- to ensure quality control."

12 craft taps at pat's pub ? anti-hipster heaven! well, i'm not sure the 12 taps really all qualify as craft but i'm not going to quibble with a place that's trying to reinvent itself through craft beer they're trying! and, you know, they do brew and can their own lager on-site and its pretty good no really, it is try it, you'll like it! dude, its $3.50 a pint, $13 a pitcher and only $12 for a six-pack to go i'm not going to lie to you it was a couple of weeks ago that i stopped in at pat's pub on a tuesday night around 9 there was no one else there which just meant the bartender gave us lots of attention and back story on the lager but... it also means that i do not have total recall of what's on those 12 taps... thank goodness they list them on the website!! cannery:  ipa and blackberry porter r & b:  red devil pale ale russell:  cream ale, wee angry scotch tree brewing:  cut-throat pale ale big rock:  traditional ale, ...

the cask of oak-aged wee angry scotch at the railway on tuesday night was a whole lot of delicious! malty and dark roasty and smooth deep mystery in a pint glass!  i much prefer the oaked to the whiskeyed i think this might be my favourite wee angry scotch cask to date! it was a bit too dark for my lager loving friends so they went for the red racer lager it was a darned fine way to begin an evening of beering it up!

busy beer night for me tonight! first stop:  the railway for cask night - tonight is russell's wee angry scotch second stop:  50 ways to love your lager at firefly - i don't generally love a lager so i hope to develop some appreciation of lagers beyond pilsners!

on my quest for the ultimate snake bite, i tried a strongbow and stanley park amber mixture the other night. i'm quite delighted by the ale's ability to jump into the lager's place and make a fabulous drink! less sweet than the usual snake bite, this one had plenty of cidery and beery goodness.  i had a second!
