NEWS RELEASE:  Odd Society Spirits Unleashes The Mongrel  A New Unadulterated B.C. Spirit is Scheduled to Hit Top Shelves this Fall  Vancouver B.C., September 10, 2015 — Odd Society Spirits is set to launch Mongrel on Thursday, September 17, 2015.  The Odd Society distillery and cocktail lounge will be carrying Mongrel along with select restaurants, bars and private liquor stores across the province. For a spirit to be declared a ‘whisky,’ it has to spend at least three years aging in a barrel. However, Mongrel can be enjoyed now because it is not officially a whisky. Called white dog, white lightening, or just plain ol’ moonshine during prohibition, Mongrel won’t have that distinctive brown colour that whisky gets from barrel aging. Mongrel is straight off the still and unadulterated. It’s naked, raw and pure.  At a time when many commercial distillers turned to corn and wheat, early Canadian farmers often produced ...

newly stocked beers at legacy liquor store in vancouver: Founded by Alex Ganum, the owner and head brewer at Upright. Alex grew up drinking his father’s German pilsners and his older brother’s Bells Porter before moving to Portland in 2002 where he decided to give brewing a go. He never looked back, and seven years later opened Upright Brewing, specializing in farmhouse-inspired beers rooted in France and Belgium but made with local ingredients and a Pacific Northwest twist. The name “Upright” is in reference to the primary instrument of Charles Mingus, a musician whose compositions defy categorization. At Upright the recipes and processes are decidedly unbound, making for a true hybrid style that shares Mingus’ spirit of creativity and craft. Each beer combines the best of French style beers with the best the Pacific Northwest has to offer, making for some truly wonderful brews. Upright Brewing Co. quote of the day

brewing with rye, the grain pliny the elder said was "unpleasant to the stomach" "Judging from BeerAdvocate's online reviews and other sources, it appears that at least 500 different beers made with rye have hit American tap handles in just the past decade.  Often, the grain is used to tive a new twist to a classic style... This dabbling has been going on for about 20 years, and not surprisingly, it led to the creation of a singular style known as American Rye beer.  Brewed as either an ale or a lager, the style is much like American Wheat beer, in which the flavor of the grain adds a subtle complexity to barley malt.  Often, it is highly kilned to provide both color and a distinctive, sometimes off-putting, nutty flavor." For a Green Flash-style modern twist, rye and wheat malts were added to the mash and American Amarillo hops used in a late boiling kettle addition. Then the beer was dry-hopped with more Amarillo for even more hop flavor, aroma and zest." Join us as we release our long-awaited collaboration brew with St. Feuillien, this weekend!
