beer column

Everyone knows that I'm a big fan of craft beer.  I extol the virtues of the local craft beer community and of drinking locally brewed beers at every opportunity, including on CBC Radio's On the Coast every second week.   But what about the other part of the beer industry, big beer, and how they’re using some questionable tactics to entice unwitting consumers? I have nothing against beer makers making and selling beer, be they large or small.  And I have no issues with people drinking beer they enjoy, whether its craft or macro. As a big fan of craft beer, though, I do like to make sure macro beer drinkers have been introduced to craft beer so they can make an educated decision when choosing the beers they drink! And I think that beer makers should be honest about the beers they’re making.  Unless you pay a lot of attention to the fine print and do your research, it is very easy to be taken in by  shadow brands  and crafty beers. Shadow...

grey cup

woohoo! i'm off to winterpeg for grey cup! i'm very interested in seeing what passes for "craft beer" at the sports bar in my hotel and at the "craft beer concert series" the city is running each night seeing as there are only two craft breweries in the whole province, i'm expecting some imports (fort garry and half pints) please, please, please, please let them be actual craft and not crafty! still, if they manage to serve actual craft beer in a province that only has two craft breweries, they will put vancouver to shame we have a zillion craft breweries (113 according to the craft brewers guild) and yet couldn't manage to offer any of them at grey cup events last year so, my fingers are crossed inside several pairs of mittens, but crossed! update: just looking at the beer list for the 150 taps at barley brothers stadium locatio n not the greatest list, but it has more options than i have hours to drink there, so i'll be fine ...

beer column

my notes from yesterday's on the coast beer column: The macrobreweries of Canada and the United States are losing market share to craft breweries.   The big guys are fighting back in several ways.   But I think they're going about it alllll wrong! One way the big Canadian breweries are trying to regain their market share lost to the increasing love of craft beer is by diversifying their products – for example to include cider in their line-ups.   MolsonCoors introduced a cider to Eastern Canada a couple of years ago.   It made its debut in BC very recently.   Labatt’s brought out its Alexander Keith’s cider in 2012.   Cider is becoming more popular, so it only makes sense to get into that market as well.   With all the craft cider available, that probably won’t be enough to stem the market share slide, but at least it’s an honest way to go. Another, not-so-honest way is to offer new beer brands that appear to be made by independent bre...

belgian beer pipeline can we get enbridge to build one of these instead?? shame on you labatt's still trying to convince the gullible that shock-top is craft brewed vintage pics of vancouver's brewing scene stone brewing is going to be available in bc once again!  yay! the serious down-side to the legislation allowing beer sales in grocery stores and unfettered re-location of existing licences under an 8 year moratorium on issuing new licences - small communities may see their licences bought up and moved elsewhere
