beer column

my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio one's on the coast with stephen quinn: I'm feeling optimistic enough about the arrival of Spring to talk about Spring beers. I think we can all agree that it is nice to get out of the dark days of winter and celebrate with a beer that looks lighter in the glass than a stout. Of all the seasons of the year though, Spring has the fewest beer styles associated with it.  Traditionally, and when I say traditionally, I mean in the Olde Worlde of beer (aka Germany and Belgium) – traditionally a bock was the beer style that indicated spring had arrived. Bocks are strong lagers from Germany.  You know it’s a bock if there’s a goat on the label.  The beer style is said to have originated in Einbeck, and then when it was adopted by Munich brewers in the 17 th century, it was often mispronounced as Ein Bock, which means a billy goat.  So the beers became known as Bocks and often the label goes for the pun with a ...

new belgium brewing

two bits of news from new belgium: New Belgium Brewing to Tweak Abbey and Trippel Recipes Recipe adjustments highlight advances in hop and malt production Ft. Collins, Colo., September 2, 2015 – Two of New Belgium Brewing’s longest running beers, Abbey Belgian Style Dubbel and Trippel Belgian Style Ale, are being reimagined and updated for a new era. Both beers started life as homebrew recipes more than 25 years ago and new developments in hop and malt manufacturing have been incorporated. Subtle recipe tweaks will allow the malty and hoppy characteristics of each beer to shine through. A new yeast strain will help balance the esters and phenol while emphasizing the Belgian character of these beers. Although these are among the first Belgian-inspired craft beers produced in the U.S., New Belgium brewers could not resist tinkering with these classics. Internal sensory panelists affirmed the results a success. “As an American craft brewer founded on Belgian tradition, we have a ...

beer column

my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio's on the coast with gloria macarenko in for stephen quinn: It may look like Fall out there right now, but I absolutely refuse to talk about pumpkin beers yet! Pumpkin beers are already on store shelves, like Central City’s popular red racer pumpkin ale and their brand new Patrick O’ Pumpkin! barrel-aged imperial pumpkin ale which launch at their Beatty Street location this evening, I am fighting seasonal creep for as long as I can! Oh, but look.  Now I'm going to talk about seasonal creep and that's going to lead me into talking about pumpkin beers.  Dagnabbit! Seasonal creep in the case of beer occurs when a seasonal beer, like a pumpkin ale, hits the market while it is still another season.  So while you are still enjoying those radlers and wits on a sunny patio, the store shelves are starting to fill up with pumpkin ales and barrel-aged goodies.   There are several theories about why we have sea...

strange fellows

strange day #6 Celebrate MIDSUMMER with Strange Fellows Brewing Strange Day #6 at Strange Fellows Brewing, June 15th through 21st As the sun sets on the longest day of the year, all over the world people light bonfires to celebrate the sun's triumph over darkness. In some places people jump over the fire to symbolically ward off the cold of the coming winter. Elsewhere, fishermen gather on the edge of the ocean to pray and make offerings to the Siren of the Seas in exchange for safe passage and a bountiful catch. If the gifts are carried out to sea, she has accepted them and their giver will be blessed with good fortune. To ensure luck for the coming year, join us for a celebration that is inspired by the sun's brilliance! On Thursday June 18th from 6-9pm, we will be hosting a Midsummer BBQ. We hope you will join us for some delicious food, a glass of dry-hopped cask Talisman, and music courtesy of our festive friends The Carnival Band! Strange Fellows is a craft brewe...

from phillips: A New-Zealand Inspired Seasonal Sipper   April 20th 2015: Inspired by the land of the Kiwi, Apteryx is a brand new fruity IPA that features New-Zealand grown Nelson Sauvin hops. The hop is a relative newcomer, first appearing in 2000 after careful cultivation, and imparts such a distinctive white wine “fruitiness” that Sauvin portion of the name was actually borrowed from the Sauvignon Blanc grape.   Apteryx pours a clear apricot colour with a marshmallow white head.  A medium-bodied malt base highlights notes of tropical fruits, gooseberries, nettles, and freshly crushed grapes.  Finishes dry. You can find this refreshing seasonal sipper at craft-focused private stores for a limited time only, or you can pop by the brewery this Thursday from 4-6 for a special draft tasting.

from dead frog brewery: Dead Frog and Red Dragon Apparel Collaborate on Red Dragon Imperial Red Ale Aldergrove, BC — Dead Frog Brewery is pleased to announce the release of a new Imperial Red Ale, an exciting new collaboration with legendary Vancouver-based international skateboarding icons, Red Dragon Apparel. The partnership came about when Red Dragon approached Dead Frog last year. "We’ve always been a fan of Dead Frog and their beer line," said Matt Meadows, Marketing Manager for Red Dragon Apparel. "So when considering the idea of doing a collaboration brew, they were our first and only choice! As we began talks with Dead Frog, right off the bat they understood what we were looking for in an RDS beer – a strong ale that makes no excuses for what it is, just like RDS. For Dead Frog, Red Dragon's brand immediately suggested a strong red ale in keeping with the power of that mythical creature. "I ...

Hazy gold in colour with superior head retention and defining aromas of pepper, orange rind and a bit of Belgian funk, on the palate of this brew can be found a near perfect marriage of rustic earth and Belgian funk, highlighted with distinct citrus rind (lemon and orange), floral notes and a touch of bready malt. This is what a textbook saison should taste like when the dial is cranked up to 10.
