new belgium brewing

two bits of news from new belgium: New Belgium Brewing to Tweak Abbey and Trippel Recipes Recipe adjustments highlight advances in hop and malt production Ft. Collins, Colo., September 2, 2015 – Two of New Belgium Brewing’s longest running beers, Abbey Belgian Style Dubbel and Trippel Belgian Style Ale, are being reimagined and updated for a new era. Both beers started life as homebrew recipes more than 25 years ago and new developments in hop and malt manufacturing have been incorporated. Subtle recipe tweaks will allow the malty and hoppy characteristics of each beer to shine through. A new yeast strain will help balance the esters and phenol while emphasizing the Belgian character of these beers. Although these are among the first Belgian-inspired craft beers produced in the U.S., New Belgium brewers could not resist tinkering with these classics. Internal sensory panelists affirmed the results a success. “As an American craft brewer founded on Belgian tradition, we have a ...

Adair's Porter recently took home bronze at the Canadian Brewing Awards. beer column

my beer notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio's on the coast with stephen quinn: I said in my 'year ahead' column back in January that I predict 2015 is going to be the year of the sour. While it is a fact that I am trying to convert Stephen to a sour beer fan, I am not trying to force sours to break out in 2015.  I don't have to - 2015 as year of the sour is already off to a running start. In January three local breweries came out with sours: Four Winds with Nectarous, Four Winds and Steel & Oak collaborated on a Gratzer and Parallel 49 put its Bodhi on tap in the tasting room. Sour beers are a varied lot of beers that have been purposely infected with yeast strains ( Lactobacillus , Brettanomyces , and Pediococcus ) that cause them to taste sour. When this happens by accident, the beer is considered spoiled. When it is done on purpose, it is considered delicious! I think a very romantic example of a sour brewery is Cantillon Brewery i...

from stone: Our Favorite Overseas-Inspired  IPA Returns! You may recall the herbaceous, bitingly hoppy fund-raising IPA we brewed four years ago to help provide relief for Japanese earthquake and tsunami victims. And if you do, we know you loved it every bit as much as we did. We originally brewed Baird/Ishii/Stone Japanese Green Tea IPA  with our friends Toshi Ishii, owner of Ishii Brewing Co. in Guam, and Bryan Baird of Japan's Baird Brewing Company , and we couldn't be happier to announce that it's back with the original crew on board. The recipe has been updated slightly, using a new Australian hop variety, Helga, in place of 2011's New Zealand Pacifica hops, but the 2015 version is still packed with all of the unique flavor combinations that you loved the first time around. This spectacular, tea-infused IPA will set sail beginning Monday, January 12. You can prepare for its arrival by watching the new video  and reading up on the tast...

On The coast beer columnist Rebecca Whyman poses with her three picks for seasonal beer. Whyman says all three are vanilla-free, and can be imported from Bravo Beer Company or found at specialty beer stores. Bonsecours Blonde de Noel : One of the only blonde ales brewed for Christmas, it is made with malt, candi sugar, hops and yeast. This is a sweet, yeasty and...

beer column

my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio's on the coast with stephen quinn ( to listen, click here and fast-forward to 10 minutes from the end - 2:19): Seasonal ales We can’t deny it any longer, winter is here, and that means it’s time for drinking winter beers.   Winter ales in these parts have been very vanilla the past several years, and by vanilla I mean the spice not that they’re boring!   So let's talk about some imported winter ales that utilize different flavours to celebrate the season. I brought in three Christmas ales from Belgium for us to taste.   These beers are imported by Bravo Beer Co.   You can find them via the Bravo BeerCo . website and at private liquor stores like Legacy, Firefly and Brewery Creek. The first is a blonde beer - one of the only blonde ales brewed for Christmas - Bonsecours Blonde de Noel from Caulier Brewery is 10% and rated 100 out of 100 by Beer Advocate but only 50 out of 100 on RateBeer.  It come...

craft beer market and stanley park brewing

the new team at stanley park brewing hosted me at their recent brewmaster's dinner at craft beer market the food was delicious and their new beers were pretty tasty moules & frites with wit i was most taken with the windstorm pale ale chock full of mosaic hops, this one is a departure from the rest of the belgian inspired line-up and one that i would drink again the winter ale was also quite nice - cherry and chocolate, with none of my despised vanilla to ruin it black forest inspired dessert the new team is well aware that stanley park is not beloved by beer nerds and they're okay with that they are right where they want to be in the market and you gotta respect that thanks so much stanley park brewing for hosting me and for drawing my name for this awesome gift basket!!
