Alex grew up drinking his father’s German pilsners and his older brother’s Bells Porter before moving to Portland in 2002 where he decided to give brewing a go. He never looked back, and seven years later opened Upright Brewing, specializing in farmhouse-inspired beers rooted in France and Belgium but made with local ingredients and a Pacific Northwest twist. The name “Upright” is in reference to the primary instrument of Charles Mingus, a musician whose compositions defy categorization. fun and fabulous beers available at legacy liquor store in vancouver: Lighthouse Brewing Barnacle Wheat IPA - $7.25 The breweries on Vancouver Island certainly know what they’re doing, and this IPA is a perfect example. Golden in colour with a nose of spice and pepper, and a palate that continues to profile spice and floral hops, this dry piney IPA shines when enjoyed with Thai and Indian food. Powell Street Brewery Belgian Witbier - $7.95 Local boys at Powell Street have produced a perfectly spiced beer for the burgeoning summer season, with orange peel, coriander, cardamom and ginger all coming together for a sweet Easter-bread aroma. An off-dry finish is preceded by ginger and spice on the palate. Driftwood Brewery Clodhopper - $8.95 A traditional Belgian-style Dubbel brewed on beautiful Vancouver Island, Driftwood has gone the extra mile with this brew using locally grown malt from the Sannich peninsula. on the heels of their anniversary pandamoneum ipa brew, phillips is back with a fairy tale ipa August 30th 2012: In appreciation of International Laser Month we are proud to follow up a giant lazer-eyed mutant Panda with this mono-horned electrically charged laser beast. But while both creatures can sizzle atoms with a glance, the Electric Unicorn White IPA is very different animal than its larger more destructive cousin. This beer is a white IPA that treads delicately on the palate. Brewed with a generous portion of wheat, the bold hops of the West combine with corriander and a mystical yeast inspired from the East--from Belgium to be specific--to produce a taste that's well balanced and loaded with plenty of Belgian-fruit character. Ditch reality and take this India pale fairy tale for a ride. If you want your story to end hoppily-ever-after, be sure to grab your Electric Unicorn IPA quick because it's only available for a limited time at finer craft beer stores.

being released today in victoria, can vancouver be far behind? me, i don't love a belgian but for this baby, i love the label so much i'm going to have to get one regardless (check out the ingredients listed down the right side of the label!)

no photos because i was a bonehead last week and kept forgetting my camera! tuesday night at the railway club featured granville island's belgian wit me, i don't like a belgian, so i just had a wee dram to taste very yeasty, very coriandery couldn't get past those to the orange that i am assured was underneath them! definitely a wit pleased the wit lovers in the crowd gave me an excuse to have the central city esb! thursday night at yaletown brewpub featured the seasonal esb dry-hopped with cascades i was coming down with a cold by this point in the week so can only be so reliable on taste and smell! but the hopes made it through my stuffed up head and danced on my palate which is bloody impressive - two thumbs up! saturday at the railway club featured a cask-off between esbs from central city and hopworks the portland timber's army were in town for some footie action and they brought the hub cask up with them i love me some hopworks, but found the ca...
