crannog dinner at rogue - part 2

Image
last week i had the pleasure of attending a beer pairing dinner at rogue kitchen and wetbar in vancouver the beers were from crannog ales part 2 of 2: rebecca and brian of crannog were on hand to tell us about the beers and other fabulous things about their farm they are members of slow food and hope to attend terre madre in turin in 2012 course three:  insurrection ipa with duo of spring lamb the dynamic lamb duo the amazing tuna they subbed for me served with spring pea puree, ipa fluid gel and spruce tips (me, i got seared tuna with saffron threads and mango salsa) i was too busy being in absolute heaven with my meal to listen to what the meat-eaters had to say about their lamby goodness seriously, the tuna was melt in your mouth perfect, the mango salsa was the perfect juxtaposition of sweet and hot, the pea puree was like tasting spring itself and saffron threads?  i felt like royalty! my slightly inebriated notes read:  "my meal is the bestest: ma...

tasting notes

at last week's beernesday at st. augustine's i began my evening with a pint of the deschutes inversion ipa definitely one of my faves "a trio of american hops deliver an over-the-top nose with hints of citrus.  surprisingly soft, caramel complexity for an 80 ibu ipa" then i moved to the crannog ales 10th anniversary fresh-hopped ipa 100% organic. dry-hopped with farm-fresh golding hops.  5.2% no hop nose, can't immediately taste the hops, but sure can feel them in my mouth as i adjust to this beer after the uber-hoppy inversion, i'm starting to get the hops and my the end, i was really getting into it next up was the hopworks abominable winter ale 7.5%  100% organic.  made with cascade, centennial and simcoe hops and six organic malts, has a complex floral, spicy and citrus hoppiness backed up by just the right amount of malt sweetness omg - a winter ipa! its a fabulously hoppy brew! i think this is my favourite winter ale although i think it m...

tasting notes

my tasting notes, such as they are, from october 27ths beernesday: in my sampler i had: longwood brewpub copperbock:  7.2%  in keeping with german tradition, this fest beer is a smooth, creamy seasonal lager well balanced with little hop aroma. red truck limited steam beer:  5%  a hybrid beer style brewing using lager yeast fermented at ale temperatures.  the result is a full flavoured, yet surprisingly crisp beer. craig street brewpub arbutus pale ale:  5%  a british style ale with a craft west coast attitude, light in body with a subtle lingering hop character. storm brewing 12 year black current lambic:  7%  not for the timid!  this beer is INTENSELY sour, dry and complex. i found the copperbock to be very clear and coppery in my glass, not too carbonated, smooth and malty, nice, but nothing to write home about i love the steam.  it just keeps surprising me with how much i am in love with it - which is why i keep putting...

st. augustine's

tasting notes back from my july 14th visit to st. augustine's... odds aren't good that all of these will still be on the menu... quote of the evening is that we "came for the basil, stayed for the huckleberry" in my sampler were: fernie brewing's what the huck huckleberry wheat storm brewing's basil ipa old yale brewing co pale ale swans brew pub arctic ale the huckleberry wheat was cloudy, but not overly yeasty. there were but a touch of huckleberries blended with the wheat - smooth, creamy, crisp finish. most delightful the basil ipa was phenomenal not a session beer, but omg it would pair with so many foods! amazing basil nose, in an ipa freaking delightful i want this all year long i am not happy that it is a limited edition dammit! the old yale pale ale is very much a pale ale would be a great session beer crisp finish i like it!  i can see why it got voted canada's best pale ale. the arctic ale is a "mild-tasting, cold...

bottled beer

rather than sampling too many beers in one night, tippling at st. augustine's the other night featured a few bottle or pint choices after a single sampler each. the thought was to try four beers we weren't sure we'd want a whole pint of, or were already in love with.  then follow those with choices we were sure we'd want a whole pint (or bottle) of.  and it turned out to be a sound plan! alison was the smartest about this method - she got them to let her have a sip of her choices first, then ordered the pints.  she had the r&b red devil ale and the tin whistle killer bee dark honey ale.  she's in love with both of these so much that she went to the beer store last night to buy herself bottles for home!  of the red devil she said:  "nice hop - really not sweet... great depth.  keeps on going."  of the killer bee she said "i'm a killer bee!" (yes, we were a bit tipsy by this point in the evening) and inspired by the mohammed ali docume...
