beer column

here are my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio's on the coast:   There is no absolute definition of craft beer, but most of the industry and consumers agree that craft beer is brewed with quality ingredients, by a brewery owned by people rather than other companies and that produces a smaller amount of beer annually.   The Brewers Association   defines American craft brewers as " small, independentand traditional ": "small" is defined as an "annual production of 6 million barrels of beer or less"; "independent" is defined as at least 75% owned or controlled by a craft brewer; and "traditional" is defined as brewing in which at least 50% of the beer's volume consists of "traditional or innovative" ingredients.   Most people agree that craft beer is artisanal vs. mass-produced. Crafty beer is the name beer advocates have been giving to beers that are pretending to be craft beers.   These are beer...

legacy liquor store

i'm off to gcbf but before i go... here are the new and exciting beers at legacy liquor store in vancouver: Eet & Bierlokaal De Molen Licht & Lustig Licht & Lustig, which means 'light and cheerful', is exactly what this delicious golden-coloured ale is! Brewed by Brouwerij de Molen in the Netherlands, this is a great beer for the end of summer.   Tatra Pils Zywiec Brewery in Poland is where this easy drinking refreshing lager hails from. This simple Eastern European style lager is in limited supply so make sure you get this one while quantities last.   Granville Island Brewing Saison The newest limited release from Granville Island's brewmaster Vern is the Belgain Saison. This brew has a fruity characteristic with lower hops and a light malt flavour. Saison, the French word for "season" - is a nod to beers traditionally brewed during the late summer harvest for thirsty farmers.

300 beer list

i didn't realize that there were themed nights for the three 300 beer list celebration nights at the alibi room its true! monday night was "sour, belgian and european style, cider & experimental" tuesday night was "stouts, porters & wee heavys" tonight will be "hop forward ales, barley wines and winter ales" fortunately for me, when i attended last night's festivities, there was still some of the central city chipotle ipa left in the cask.  so i had me some! and it was delicious! not as peppery as the rogue chipotle ale, but just as smokey, and in my humble beer opinion, ipa is the perfect conduit for chipotle smelled amazing!  tasted great! of tuesday's casks i managed to taste tariq's imperial stout and vern's imperial stout 300 i had vern's early on when i still had taste buds tasted like a session beer, but lord, its an imperial - beware i couldn't really taste the cocoa nibs and curacao orange peel it...
