because the phillips 10th anniversary imperial ipa was 3l and 10% big we decided that we needed a group to drink it and what better excuse to get together with a couple of buddies than watching a bc lions game on tv? stacey, bridget, ryan and i spent saturday afternoon polishing off the 10th anniversary beer and several other potent brews is that what they mean by a lost afternoon??? look how proud we are of our magnum of beer! we had some trouble getting the darned cork out but once we macguyver'd through that little issue, we motored right on through that beer first sip made me feel warm inside - thank you 10% abv! i don't understand why the reviews are so mixed - i found nothing there to hate on it's not in my top ten ipas of all time, but i very much enjoyed it nice hop to malt ratio, while the alcohol warmed me inside (and got me giggly), it was not overwhelming, a perfectly delightful imperial ipa and the time-line on the bottle of phillips brewing ov...

the third stop on my mini san francisco pub crawl was monk's kettle on 16th between valencia and guerrero its a narrow bar featuring a great beer list and a tasty food menu (soon to be followed by a brewery in the neighbourhood) check out the beer list , the menu and the bar ! i had me a retribution imperial ipa, 9.5% and only $4.75 for a pint i love the united states of hoperica! found it to be a bitter little number and guess the ibus must be pushing 100 on this one stacey tried the redor pilsner (brasserie dupont, 5.0%, $11.00) alex tried the grand saison farmhouse ale (grand teton brewing, 7.5%, $5.25) and alison tried the reality czeck (moonlight brewing, 4.8%, $5.75) frankly by this point in the crawl i am amazed that i was still keeping notes at all and here they are: far too small for its own popularity, no wonder they want to expand. but i like it - pretty taps, nice bar, booths to sit in, very pretty bathroom, even though its just a onesy, divine b...

stacy picked us up some hopworks' ace of spades the other day she was worried that at $15 a bottle the store wouldn't want to bring many bottles in and if they didn't sell that we'd be stuck having to buy them all never fear! this is the good stuff - people like it and people will buy it!! in fact, they have to order more now because they sold all the previous stock what did she think of it when she finally tasted it? by gum, its yellow! that was my first thought as i vigourously poured green flash 's imperial ipa into my glass yellow, like its label okay, so maybe its a very light caramel colour definite hoppy nose good head and lovely cascading action incredibly bitter hoppy taste that just won't leave my mouth not that i'm complaining, i am a fan of the bitter hoppiness 9.4% 101 ibus i'm pairing it with my latest pizza concoction, broccoli, basil and goat cheese the bitter cuts right on through the goatiness bitter goat, a lovely pairing! i'm definitely enjoying this beer but i think i might like the west coast ipa better... the bottle says:  "san diego-style ipa, at it has come to be known by many, is super-hoppy, high gravity, yet highly quaffable ale.  our imperial ipa is created in this new tradition with intense hop flavors and aromas from a unique blend of summit and nugget hops.  it's all about the hops!" quaffable yes, session beer?...

here for your reading pleasure is my real time reviews of Swans Extra IPA and Moylan's Hopsickle Imperial Ale. didn't have a great day today, so its a two beer review this time folks!  and two heavy hitters!  the extra ipa is 6.8% and the moylan's is 9.2%.  forget what ails you! swans was incredibly carbonated and heady.  unfiltered, so kinda cloudy.  had kind of a belgian lager taste to it to me... you know, on the sour yeasty side...  definitely not my favourite flavour... so not my new favourite ipa.  would i drink it again if you bought it for me?  for sure.  would i drink it instead of coors light - doubly for sure.  will i buy another big bottle for myself?  doubtful. i find the hopsickle a little on the malty side... drinkable for sure, but one the malty side for me.  good head, some lace remaining... live yeast, so its a bit sedimenty and cloudy.  the alcohol is nicely tempered though, it just feels a little...
