beer column

I'm back! And only slightly jet-lagged. What's with all the smoke? Can't I leave you alone for 10 days? Anyway, here are my notes from last evening's beer column on CBC's On the Coast with the wonderful and beer-loving Stephen Quinn: There's always something new in the world of craft beer - that's one of the great parts of the boom! A couple of breweries have new head brewers: Kevin Emms has moved from Deep Cove brewing to take over the small batch program at Granville Island Brewing. His first new brew for them is the 2 Tides India Session Ale. Steamworks Brewing's new head brewer is Julia Hanlon. Julia comes to Steamworks after a 10 year stint at the Molson brewery. As for new locations, Chambar Restaurant relocated a few doors up Beatty Street last year. The new location gives the restaurant a larger space, and it has a patio - a really nice patio. While you won't get much of a view from it, unlike some of the other craft beer patios in town...

legacy

new beer offerings at legacy liquor store in vancouver: Brooklyn Brewery - Silver Anniversary Lager - $18.90 Happy Anniversary, Brooklyn, 25 years of excellent brewing and many more to come! Brewed to the strength of a dopplebock, this lager uses four different malts in addition to Cascade, Willamette, and Hallertauer Mittelfrueh and Saphir hops. Pouring dark amber in colour with notes of citrus, toasted malt and butterscotch on the nose, aromas that carry through on the palate before fading into a spicy hop finish, this brew is an excellent way to celebrate 25 years. Tree Brewing - Hop Head Black IPA - $7.85 Nestled in the BC interior, Tree Brewing consistently churns out some spectacular seasonal beers, their Hop Head continuing the trend. Five hops and six malts can be found in this dark brown, nearly black beer. Biscuits, citrus (think grapefruit) and a little pine are all found in the aroma while smoke and chocolate lead the pack on the palate followed closely by citrus and pi...

legacy liquor store

fun beers available at legacy liquor store in vancouver: Parallel 49 Brewing – From East Van With Love - $13.75 A collaboration between Parallel 49 and Gigantic Brewing is responsible for this Bourbon Barrel-Aged Maple Stout. Rich and dark, with notes of maple subdued by barrel-aging, makes this beer a must for your cellar. Alameda Brewing – Bad Bunny - $7.75 Easter may be in the rearview, but Alameda is leading the pack with Bad Bunny, a lightly malted and hopped Cream Ale with subtle malt and fruit on the nose. On the palate fruit dominates, making this an excellent Cream Ale by any standard. Tree Brewing – Captivator Doppelbock - $7.75 Once a staple of fasting monks, this style of beer has recently exploded in popularity in the modern world. Sweet, malty and lightly hopped, this strong ale is full of dark fruits and biscuit, making it an excellent variation of a European classic.

beernesday

Image
too many beers i wanted to try at beernesday at st. augustine's last night! had to have me two samplers to fit them all in look how well my iphone camera works when there is light whistler brewing cheakamus chai maple ale - 5%  this dark bronze ale is made with real maple syrup, added right to the mash.  then, a trace of chai tea is added during the filtration process.  the result is a highly complex, mildly spicy palette structure hoooo boy that is sweet!  it would be awesome in pancake batter or over ice cream a bit too much maple sweetness for me in a beer though, the chai notes were subtle, but appreciable chuckanut brewery pilsner - 5%  in 1842 a bavarian monk smuggled lager yeast from munich to the bohemian town of pilsn where they used the yeast with british pale malt, crafting a beer golden in color.  chuckanut pilsner is truly mouthwatering, deeply satisfying, and refreshing! i do love me a pilsner, and this one did not disappoint chuck...

biercraft and firefly

Image
i spent my lunch hour today at firefly and biercraft success at firefly!  bit of fail at biercraft :( shopping with shans at firefly my hoppy haul biercraft has a new lunch menu and were offering $2 lunches between 11:30 and 1:30 today, plus a $2 coupon for your next lunch visit, meaning that your net spending would end up being zero a free lunch who doesn't want a free lunch? alas, because of the deal they were not able to make substitutions or deletions to their menu items and this vegetarian who isn't eating cheese these days was shit outta luck on menu items bummer but on the bright side, i made it back to work on time! i'm surprised there weren't more people in there taking advantage of the special, but then again, i only heard about it at about 11 this morning...

beernesday

i began beernesday last night with two martinis i love the holiday season! anyway, after my after-work-schmoozey-do i dutifully headed off to st. augustine's to imbibe in craft beer i love craft beer! lagunitas sucks holiday ale - 7.9%  a "cereal medley" of barley, rye, wheat and oats.  full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.85% abv, then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor i love when they joyously dry-hop my beer! and i am in love with this beer - so much hoppy goodness, so many grains - i may have found my new breakfast of champions... seriously, loved it so much i had to have a whole pint after my taster tree spiced reserve ale - 7.5%  brewed using a special blend of brewer's spices special indeed! no vanilla in sight, just subtle spices all blending nicely on the tongue this is the tree winter ale i will choose to drink from now on (no vertical vanilla for me!) rogue yellow snow ipa - 6.2%  pale...

pat's pub

12 craft taps at pat's pub ? anti-hipster heaven! well, i'm not sure the 12 taps really all qualify as craft but i'm not going to quibble with a place that's trying to reinvent itself through craft beer they're trying! and, you know, they do brew and can their own lager on-site and its pretty good no really, it is try it, you'll like it! dude, its $3.50 a pint, $13 a pitcher and only $12 for a six-pack to go i'm not going to lie to you it was a couple of weeks ago that i stopped in at pat's pub on a tuesday night around 9 there was no one else there which just meant the bartender gave us lots of attention and back story on the lager but... it also means that i do not have total recall of what's on those 12 taps... thank goodness they list them on the website!! cannery:  ipa and blackberry porter r & b:  red devil pale ale russell:  cream ale, wee angry scotch tree brewing:  cut-throat pale ale big rock:  traditional ale, ...

tasting notes

not that i'm behind on my notes or anything... here's the past two week's worth of beernesday tastings at st. augustine's september 21, 2011 taster #1 elysian night owl pumpkin ale - 5.9%  brewed with 7 1/2 pounds of pumpkin per barrel and spiked in conditioning with ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and allspice rogue ales chatoe good chit pilsner - 5%  made with rogue farm barley that is floor-malted in small batches crannog bogtrotter brown ale - 4.8%  a nutty, sweet brown ale with a touch of toffee in the flavour red truck ipa - wasn't on the menu i found the bogtrotter to be a "nice little brown - easy drinking" the night owl was pumpkin pieish, not overly spiced... "pretty good, but i don't think i'm ready for fall beers" the pilsner was practically an ipa, so of course i loved it! the red truck ipa was "quite nice" taster #2 russell cranberry wheat ale - 4.7%  we take an already damn fine wheat ale and ad...
