quietly opening on commercial drive last week, stateside craft is the newest craft beer bar in the city portland craft's younger, over-achieving sister will officially open on july 4th but until then, they are soft launching and you can stop in for some wonderful brews and yummy food located in the former avanti's pub in il mercato mall at gravely and commercial it is a whole lot prettier inside than the former pub the female-identified bathroom is 8 million times nicer (thank dog!) bright (or as bright as a place with only a couple of windows can be), polished, open and airy this ain't avanti's, that's for sure and i couldn't be happier now, don't get me wrong, avanti's did me right for many years but their refusal to get any craft beer on tap led me to move my commercial drive beer drinking to st. augustine's as soon as that alternative presented itself now that st. a's has line-ups all the time, i've been jonesing for anoth...

i went all the way to victoria this weekend but had no time to visit any breweries or english, irish or scottish pubs all my time was taken up by a lovely wedding and reception congratulations chris and joshua! i did, however, manage to quaff a bottle of phillips hop circle ipa at the reception and a few draft lighthouse beacon ipas at the after-party go me!

stillwater artisinal ales will be getting a brick and mortar address this year brian strumke won't be brewing there though of love and regret, located in baltimore, will be styled after san francisco's city beer with a pub downstairs and a provisions store upstairs "Renovations started a week ago and is expected to end sometime in the Spring. He described the bar's look as "Old World modernism."  "I want it to feel like you're walking into one of our labels," he says. "Like a feeling of intrigue."" pub grub, 23 taps, casks, stillwater ales... sounds perfect to me (except for that pesky part about it being really far away from vancouver!)

from Vancouver Island Brewery Beer Fact of the Day: Many years ago in England, pub frequenters had a whistle baked into the rim or handle of their ceramic mugs. When they needed a refill, they used the whistle to get some service. "Wet your whistle", is the phrase inspired by this practice!

i took advantage of my free beer coupon last week and visited the charles its quite a swank new pub in the woodwards building not sure if its owned by the same folks as pivo, but they're related somehow the food menu looks amazing not that i tried any of it, my visit was strictly a beer occasion but i sure was tempted the beer list is nothing to write home about and certainly not as good as pivo's but it was decent and we enjoyed our free pints of the whistler pale ale heck, we even had a pitcher after we drank our freebies! love the bathrooms! they are all single stall affairs with contained sink four of them i believe, down a hallway half marked for women, half for men and boy, were they ever nice! lots of big screen televisions great lighting and comfy seating i might just go there again! oh, and the woodwards original w is just outside the door!

from pike brewery in seattle: By craft brewery standards,  we are but a baby in relation to many of the greatest European breweries. However, in America, we are regarded as a pioneer. At 21, our beers give those breweries from across the pond, a real run for their money. Our customers tell us daily that Pike beers are both first and world class. We may be mature, however,  we still feel like a kid with a future as bright as a Pike Pale. Speaking of which, our coming of age was celebrated for a week, with prices rolled back to opening day prices on Pike Pale, XXXXX Stout, and IPA. Guests were delighted with our special prix fixe dinner, described by various guests as "awesome," "sensational," and "delicious." Our birthday celebration was a movable feast,  with delicious events at which Charles and I presented Pike. and yet another great bad beer shirt this one is alison's and oh so appropriate! i remember when we used to marathon train together, alison and i would go for our long runs on friday nights after work we'd run for however many hours we had to (yes, i said hours, i never said we were smart) then have a quick shower and hit the pub we'd down our first pint and order nachos with our second pint by the time the nachos came we were already pretty darned loaded! good times!
