almost february

as my self-imposed month of cleansing comes to a close i have some thoughts on trying to be a beer person and live without beer for 31 days first off, let me admit that i didn't make it to 31 days i chose to have drinks on the 14th and the 15th, then tried to go back on the wagon for the rest of the month but alas, once you open that darned pandora's box, it's soooo darned easy to find another good reason to drink! my motives for drinking on the 14th and 15th were pure the ones since then have not been on the 14th i went to an about-to-open brewery and tried a sample of each of their beers this was an opportunity that i didn't feel i could miss out on that i would be cutting off my nose to spite my face if i was to be stubborn and refuse the time-sensitive offer just because it was january i had quite a bit of internal debate about the matter it was not an easy decision to make in the end, i went with my gut and drank the beers two weeks later, i have no ...

stateside craft

quietly opening on commercial drive last week, stateside craft is the newest craft beer bar in the city portland craft's younger, over-achieving sister will officially open on july 4th but until then, they are soft launching and you can stop in for some wonderful brews and yummy food located in the former avanti's pub in il mercato mall at gravely and commercial it is a whole lot prettier inside than the former pub the female-identified bathroom is 8 million times nicer (thank dog!) bright (or as bright as a place with only a couple of windows can be), polished, open and airy this ain't avanti's, that's for sure and i couldn't be happier now, don't get me wrong, avanti's did me right for many years but their refusal to get any craft beer on tap led me to move my commercial drive beer drinking to st. augustine's as soon as that alternative presented itself now that st. a's has line-ups all the time, i've been jonesing for anoth...

a beer beginner's guide to hops peaches and cream ale pie recipe (is it wrong that when i read misused words i picture the author doing what they actually said?  in this example i am picturing her hurdling her way through her days until summer.  it is probably a very good workout... maybe even burning off all those pie calories) vancouver bars that offer food as good as the craft beers i agree with her on portland craft and biercraft but craft beer market?  insipid food with no flavour was my review of my one visit there the beer didn't wow me either, so i never bothered to go back again several people i have talked to have had the same experience... so i'm still not tempted to go back not when there are so many other incredible places in town to get my craft beer and yummy food fix! uses for spent grain go east van brewers , go! all about yeast Nonna's Sweet Spring Finish Campagnolo Restaurant Lines Up Tuesday Night Homestyle Suppers Vancouver ...

beer, delicious beer

i have been back on the ambrosia for six days now and i have yet to extol its virtues here bad, bad beer geek! let's work backwards through my past six days last night was beernesday at st. augustine's where i enjoyed a taster flight of howe sound total eclipse of the hops (love this citrusy imperial), hoyne's devil's dream ipa (love this too!), moon under water's victorious weizenbock (cloudy, not too sure about chocolate and wheat together, the banana notes were interesting, and i really enjoyed the new zealand hops) and creepy uncle dunkel (whose vanilla notes were subtle enough for me to enjoy this lovely lager), plus pints of ninkasi total domination ipa (by far the maltiest of my ipas of the evening) and driftwood's fat tug (always a nice way to end an evening) clicky clicky for jan zeschky's review of the hoyne devil's dream tuesday night was cask night at the railway club where i had a lovely jameson-infused stout by central city...
