beer column

From On the Coast on Tuesday: Just when you think you’ve got a handle on craft beer, another brewery opens up, another style becomes popular or a new trend pops up.  Mariner Brewing is poised to open on the Barnet Highway in Coquitlam in August.  I understand it will have a 50 person tasting room and a steam-powered brewery.  So watch social media for the opening announcement! One potential new trend is hop powder.  I’m not hearing a lot about it in Vancouver yet, but there are some breweries in the US who are experimenting with it, including Georgetown Brewing in Seattle. Hop powder is pretty much what it sounds like – it is a powdered form of hops.  The powder is an essential oil-rich concentrate made by extracting resin glands from the hops at very cold temperatures in a nitrogen atmosphere to preserve the quality of the oils.  The resulting powder contains twice the percentage of alpha acids – which is what bitters beer - as the origi...

my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio one's on the coast with stephen quinn: If you can’t make it to Munich for the famous Oktoberfest, being held right now, never fear – there are several smaller versions taking place right here at home!  Harvest Haus  begins on Thursday.  Ooom-pah, sausages and pretzels, and of course, lots of beer await you at the Queen Elizabeth plaza.  Running Thursday, Friday and Saturday this weekend, and Friday, Saturday and Sunday of next, you can enjoy sword-play and dancing, and cheersing with ceramic steins. Darby’s Gastown is celebrating Oktoberfest on October 2 nd from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.  They’re pairing four beer styles, dunkel, marzen, alt and hefeweizen with German fare of pretzels and sausages.  No tickets required, just show up and enjoy. Port Moody’s Oktoberfest runs from September 29 th to October 2 nd and the 6 th to the 9 th at 100 Newport Way.  There will be beer, pretzels, saus...

beer column

my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio one's on the coast: Everyone is abuzz with the news that the price of craft beer has gone up in British Columbia.   I’m definitely not in favour of increasing beer prices, but I also can’t say that I’m surprised by the increase.  Beer advocates have been saying since the announcement of “leveling the playing field” that the policy was going to result in an increase in beer prices.  And here we are, a mere two months after the change and prices on 90% of the beers at the government liquor stores have increased, some by 10%.  But just because it is expected doesn't mean that craft beer drinkers aren't very annoyed by the price increase.  Especially when the increase is not even across the board.  Craft beer has definitely seen a higher price increase than macro beers. Molson Canadian, Labatt’s Blue and Kokanee beers haven't seen a price increase.   I think the people who are looking for a...

off the rail is almost ready ! some westender love for the donnelly group there's gonna be a new brewery in victoria town soon beer bribery, pay to play, whatever you call it, it is considered a pretty evil practice by most craft beer loving folks here are some wise words about the concept from half pints in winnipeg pretty things' twitter war from esquire.com from westcoaster blog this is hardly a new phenomenon, nor is is just happening in north america check out this 2010 article about chicago and this 2010 article about baltimore and this one from the uk does it happen in vancouver? i have no concrete proof that it does, but c'mon, why else would so many bars tie themselves to so many taps of crappy beer?  loyalty and swill-drinking clientele can only account for part of the phenomenon.  and frankly, brewery reps for a few local breweries have mentioned to me that they've been asked what they can offer an establishment or two around town - noth...
