Cranberry Orange Wit - 5% - 650mL November 30th, 2015 - Say hello to our little friend! Scarfface is snow-packed with enough cranberry and citrus to make a bad guy feel good, and is a welcome break from the heavy winter ales. Pouring a soft melon orange colour with a pillow white head, aromas of fresh oranges and fruity esters lead to a sweet orange wheat body, that finishes with a crisp cranberry tartness. This seasonal brew is only available for a limited time from your preferred craft-focused private liquor store.  If you find yourself in our neck of the woods, come on down to the brewer...

legacy liquor store

new beers available at legacy liquor store in vancouver: Back in the 1980’s before the Craft Beer boom, Mark Irvin fell in love with suds that were more than just cold. Falling head over heels for the art and science of brewing beer with character, Mark took the next step in 1993 and the Northern Lights Brewing Company was born. Following eight years of producing draft beer and self-distributing kegs to local eateries, Mark and his brewing venture moved to its current location on the Spokane River and added a pub. Skip ahead to 2012 and Northern Lights Brewing is a man stronger with John Bryant, formerly of Deschutes, Odell and Oskar Blues breweries, working together with Mark Irvin to showcase the best of what the ‘Inland Empire’ has to offer. However, not everything was so rosy. Receiving the cold shoulder and the silent treatment over a name dispute with an eastern brewery, Northern Lights Brewing Co. was reborn as No-Li Brewhouse, and a wryly named Silent Treatment Pale Ale took ...

beer column

my notes from tuesday's beer column on cbc radio's on the coast topic:  gluten-free beers A couple of weeks ago I answered a listener’s question about wheat-free beer. Today I'd like to take you a little further down that road and talk about gluten-free beers. The four basic ingredients in beer are barley, water, hops and yeast. Barley has gluten in it, so all beers following the Bavarian purity law will have gluten in them. Wheat is present in beers when called for by the recipe, such as in wit beers and hefeweizens, or sometimes as an adjunct. If you have a wheat intolerance you’ll have to be careful to choose pure beers to avoid wheat. If you are gluten intolerant though, you will have to find a gluten-free beer. Gluten is a protein complex found in wheat (including kamut and spelt), barley and rye. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease where the surface of the small intestine that absorbs nutrients from food is damaged by gluten. It seems that m...

Grapefruit and malt dominate the nose while nuts and toast are found on the palate. Medium-bodied and textured, it satisfies the greatest thirst. Fort Garry Kona Imperial Stout - $7.55 From Winnipeg, Manitoba, this roasty Imperial Stout boasts notes of coffee and malt to match its dark mocha appearance, with more caramel and coffee taking charge in the flavour department. Medium-bodied and smooth, this Brewmaster Series beer is a solid contender in the realm of stouts. Phillips Twisted Oak Barrel Reserve Red Ale - $7.85 Aged in freshly emptied rum barrels to give it a deep amber hue, this brew wraps lightly roasted malts in sugarcane sweetness. It’s not often that a beer like this comes around, so don’t miss out. Enjoy in a snifter at cellar temperature.
