beer notes

these are my beer notes from last night's beer column on cbc radio's on the coast with stephen quinn: Its dark and cold out these days - which means people are more likely to be sitting down to heartier fare like soups, stews and casseroles for dinner.  Beer makes a great addition to all of those.  Beer provides body and rich flavours to dishes.  You can make a very easy beer and cheese soup by just adding a bottle of beer to boiling stock, simmer it for an hour and then add some nice cheese just before you serve it.  For a stew or casserole, just substitute beer for some of the liquid and you've upped the flavour content.  If you're making pulled pork in the slow cooker, add beer!  Marinade your meat in beer.  Reduce the beer and use it in sauces and gravies. If you want proper recipes of how to use beer in your cooking there are plenty floating around on the internet, including on beer websites such as craftbeer.com .  They have soups, m...

#yvrbeertweetup

instead of going home after my cbc gig last night like i should have done and been a responsible human i went to smiley's pub and had me some wonderful cask ale like an interesting and beer-engaged human #yvrbeertweetup was having a hopscotch festival precursor there were five casks on offer, all with whisk(e)y in them that is a recipe for an intoxicating evening! two casks were pumpkin ales, two were stouts the fifth was an ipa i know we're all very shocked here, but i went with the ipa! lighthouse provided a marmalade imperial whiskey ipa using quince and citrus and i can't remember what all else fruits and a whole 26er of whiskey, that 9% fruity ipa went down far too easily delicious! i coulda drunk that all night but fortunately for my head this morning, it ran out pretty quickly! they're doing the whole thing over again tonight with different casks at the bimini in kits i have my regular beernesday group tonight so i won't be making it ou...

i'm not sure what to think of the #yvrbeertweetup at smiley's pub last night it seems kinda funny to me to get a whole bunch of people together and then expect them to be on their mobile devices the whole time weird social scene, you know? i very much enjoyed the red truck worst bitter cask it was the best of the night camra vancouver vice-president dieter friesen gave one of the short speeches at the event and posed for me in front of our stellar banner there were casks there were beers on tap there were prizes so there were good reasons to attend i just might be too old skool for this kind of event to become a "can't miss" in my social calendar and frankly, even with my glasses on i still couldn't see the tweet screen well enough to follow along! gramma's too old for this kind of fun

yvr tweetup

camra vancouver

from the camra vancouver newsletter: Hello everyone, 2011 is coming to a close in a few days, but what a great year it's been for craft beer and real ale in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland! More and more liquor stores, pubs, and restaurants are beginning to carry a wide selection of craft beer, and it's even creating quite the buzz in the mainstream. It's not just beer bloggers typing away about the great beers in BC because we saw business magazines, to major newspapers, etc publish plenty of articles about the local craft beer scene. Vancouver Craft Beer Week was jam packed with events this year, and we even had BC Craft Beer Month! Last but not least there's been some great collaborations between brewers and breweries as well. As far as real ale goes, this year we saw more establishments on board with the weekly/monthly cask program. But what's really exciting is that we now have 6 different restaurants that serve real ale on a daily basis! This year The Wh...
