St. Patrick’s Day is tomorrow.  I would like to remind you that there are more traditional ways to celebrate the Irish than by drinking green beer! Life is short!   Drink good beer!   Like a lovely dry Irish stout! One of the most common stouts, Dry Irish Stouts tend to have a bit of a lighter body, which makes them very drinkable!  They're usually a lower carbonation brew and can be served on a nitro system for a creamy mouthfeel.  The bitterness comes from both the roasted barley and the hops, though the roasted malt will be the more noticeable flavour. Guinness is probably the best known example of the style, but you can get some really nice local versions too – see below for a few examples. If you're in Vancouver and looking for a non-green beer-y way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, check out one (or more) of the below: - From the folks who bring you the HarvestHaus Oktoberfest celebrations comes The KelticLanding .   Held over two ...

st. patrick's day

if you'll be in seattle this weekend, pike brewing can help you celebrate green day: Time marches to its own drummer and St. Patrick's Day is but a wee week away. With the big day falling on a Tuesday, Pike Brewing will begin celebrating St. Paddy's this coming Friday and continue the festivities through the 17th. Tis a stout brew we've aged in a Woodinville Whiskey barrel to welcome the  Stout Pounders , a  Celtic Folk band. They will perform from 6-9 pm this Friday, March 13 . Come tap your toes, dance a jig, and join in the fun. The Pike Pub has some delectable food specials too: our superb Corned Beef and Cabbage, luscious Irish Stew and Pike Pretzels (baked with spent grain and Pike Naughty Nellie). Top it all off with Pike Kilt Lifter Scotch Ale. All Irish (and everyone else's) eyes are smiling each time The Elliott Bay Pipe and Drum Band plays at The Pike Pub. For more than ten years, this 22-piece band has entertained our guests on St. Patrick...

cbc column

St. Patrick’s day is approaching.   Can I tempt you to drink something other than green beer? I mean hey, if you're really into green beer, then by all means, drink up.  I hear they'll be serving it at the Blarney Stone. For me though,  food colouring added to beer doesn’t enhance my drinking experience, especially as it is generally added to macro lagers.   I would rather drink flavourful beer!   I find the idea of “drowning the shamrock” for luck, where a clover is added to beer or whisky and the whole thing downed, shamrock and all, a lot more palatable way to put some green in my beer to celebrate the day. Afterall, g reen beer is not an Irish tradition.   So where did green beer come from?   Who thought that it would be a good idea to slip food colouring into beer?   T he earliest reference I found to the drinking of green beer is a newspaper articlefrom 1914 about a New York social club serving green beer at a St. Patrick’s...

green beer - naturally

from saltspring island brewing: Because we get asked about this every year, we did some research for ya: here's how to make green beer for St Paddy's, sans chemicals. So, if you insist on imbibing your beer a-la Lephrechaun this Saturday, you may do so more naturally. (makes sense if you're drinking organic beer ;) Note: because beer is already 'yellow', blue coloring is the way to get green beer. Do It Yourself – Homemade Natural Blue Food Coloring Ingredients: Half head red cabbage (yes, I said “red cabbage!”) Water Baking Soda Method: 1. Wash the cabbage and cut out the stem. 2. Chop into small pieces. 3. Place cabbage pieces in a pot and add water until the cabbage is covered. 4. Simmer for 10 minutes and then drain. 5. The resulting liquid will be purplish. 6. Gradually add baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon at a time, until you get a nice blue hue. Be careful, because the baking soda will add flavor to the coloring. If you are using the color fo...
