newly stocked beers at legacy liquor store in vancouver: Founded by Alex Ganum, the owner and head brewer at Upright. Alex grew up drinking his father’s German pilsners and his older brother’s Bells Porter before moving to Portland in 2002 where he decided to give brewing a go. He never looked back, and seven years later opened Upright Brewing, specializing in farmhouse-inspired beers rooted in France and Belgium but made with local ingredients and a Pacific Northwest twist. The name “Upright” is in reference to the primary instrument of Charles Mingus, a musician whose compositions defy categorization. At Upright the recipes and processes are decidedly unbound, making for a true hybrid style that shares Mingus’ spirit of creativity and craft. Each beer combines the best of French style beers with the best the Pacific Northwest has to offer, making for some truly wonderful brews. Upright Brewing Co. Seven - $12.55 French-inspired ales with a West Coast twist to give them an identity...

freshly stocked at legacy liquor store in vancouver: Named after the Dageraadplaats, a neighbourhood square in Antwerp, Belgium, Dageraad Brewing is brewer Ben Coli’s effort to transport a small piece of the beer culture he found there home to British Columbia. Spending his youth traveling the world, Ben met three Belgians in Laos and quickly became fast friends, subsequently visiting them in Antwerp several times. Inevitably, at least once each visit, they would find themselves in the Dageraadplaats drinking the legendary beers of Belgium. It was these first encounters with Belgian beers that led Ben to try brewing them himself at home, and it was with his first Belgian-style homebrew that he fell in love. It was incredible—fruity, spicy, complex, but light and drinkable. Interest eventually grew into obsession, and a period of intensive study soon followed including brewing school and beer sabbaticals in Belgium, crisscrossing the country to visit breweries in tiny Flemish villages...

freshly stocked at legacy liquor store in vancouver: It all began in 1997 when Bryan and Sayuri Baird quit their jobs and headed to the Pacific Northwest, ground zero for the U.S. craft beer renaissance, to study brewing. Enter 2000, and the Numazu Fishmarket Taproom opens in Tokyo with no customers, just workers, and after six months of local indifference they knew they needed more money to survive. Baird Brewing Company was then incorporated with seed money from friends and family, and in 2003 began to expand the brewery in order to service the thirsty Tokyo market, installing a 250-litre brewing system on the first floor. This marked the dawn of their brand artwork, developed by graphic designer Eiko Nishida, who continues to this day to passionately craft each piece. The inaugural brew at the new facility was poured on January 1, 2006, coinciding with the 5-year anniversary of the debut of Baird Beer at the Fishmarket Taproom. Baird eventually began exporting in 2008, shipping to...

newly stocked at legacy liquor store in vancouver: The minds behind Chuckanut Brewery have quite a history when it comes to beer, establishing breweries and brewpubs across the world. Mari and Will Kempers moved to Mexico in the late 90s to start the first two Sierra Madre Brewpubs in Monterrey, and in 2001 left for Istanbul to start Turkey’s first brewpub, “Taps”. The Kempers were then asked to return to Istanbul several years later to build Turkey’s first small craft brewery. While overseas, they traveled extensively throughout England, Belgium and Germany, visiting breweries and attending several trade shows and conferences, gaining new information that they now share with their Northwest Washington community. Chuckanut Brewery & Kitchen is passionate about being a sustainable member of their community and taking care of the environment. Since opening their doors in late July 2008 a movement towards Zero Waste has been implemented, recycling spent grains with local farmers, an...

Founded in 2002 by Gunnar Wiig and Kjetil Jikiun with one mission, to create fantastic full-bodied handcrafted beer. The name Nøgne Ø, which means “Naked Island,” is a poetic term used by Henrik Ibsen to describe the countless stone outcroppings that are visible off Norway’s southern coast. It also paints a symbolic picture of what two Norwegian homebrewers set out to do in 2002 in a country flooded with macrobeers. Uncompromising in their methods, Nøgne Ø creates gold from gold using malts and hops such as Maris Otter, Cascade, Centennial, Chinook and Columbus. Quality ingredients for quality craft beers, it’s as simple as that. Since their founding, Nøgne Ø has grown from a 300 hl production to an estimated 3500 hl with more than 20 different styles brewed regularly. This Grimstad, Norway-based brewery is a testament to what two bold homebrewers can accomplish with a quality craft brew. Nøgne Ø Imperial Rye Porter - $14.45 A collaborative brew for the rainy weather courtesy of Ter...

new beers available at legacy liquor store in vancouver: Back in the 1980’s before the Craft Beer boom, Mark Irvin fell in love with suds that were more than just cold. Falling head over heels for the art and science of brewing beer with character, Mark took the next step in 1993 and the Northern Lights Brewing Company was born. Following eight years of producing draft beer and self-distributing kegs to local eateries, Mark and his brewing venture moved to its current location on the Spokane River and added a pub. Skip ahead to 2012 and Northern Lights Brewing is a man stronger with John Bryant, formerly of Deschutes, Odell and Oskar Blues breweries, working together with Mark Irvin to showcase the best of what the ‘Inland Empire’ has to offer. However, not everything was so rosy. Receiving the cold shoulder and the silent treatment over a name dispute with an eastern brewery, Northern Lights Brewing Co. was reborn as No-Li Brewhouse, and a wryly named Silent Treatment Pale Ale took ...
