weekend

i will be spending a fair bit of time this weekend at bc place tonight to watch the lions beat the pants off the roughriders sunday to watch the whitecaps and timbers battle it out it will be delightful but but what the heck am i going to drink? there is no good beer at bc place there is not even half decent beer at bc place there is no good cider at bc place there is passably drinkable cider at bc place maybe i will watch the games sober it has been suggested that i bring hop oil with me and make an ipl out of what's available to me maybe... but i am not gonna drink from the taps no way, no how - gross! file this under first world beer geek problems

grey cup

let's go lions! i am very delighted that the bc lions won the 99th grey cup! and i was there to see it! woot! there were even beer choices other than budweiser for the game which almost makes up for choosing nickelback for the half time show

beer tasting

because the phillips 10th anniversary imperial ipa was 3l and 10% big we decided that we needed a group to drink it and what better excuse to get together with a couple of buddies than watching a bc lions game on tv? stacey, bridget, ryan and i spent saturday afternoon polishing off the 10th anniversary beer and several other potent brews is that what they mean by a lost afternoon??? look how proud we are of our magnum of beer! we had some trouble getting the darned cork out but once we macguyver'd through that little issue, we motored right on through that beer first sip made me feel warm inside - thank you 10% abv! i don't understand why the reviews are so mixed - i found nothing there to hate on it's not in my top ten ipas of all time, but i very much enjoyed it nice hop to malt ratio, while the alcohol warmed me inside (and got me giggly), it was not overwhelming, a perfectly delightful imperial ipa and the time-line on the bottle of phillips brewing ov...

cask night

Image
on tuesday night at the railway club's cask night i had the pleasure of drinking r&b's strawberry cream ale and it was fabulous! i don't normally love a cream ale but putting strawberries in it, subtle as they were, just made it fabulous! strong work r&b! and last night at the yaletown brewpub it was a cask of pale ale dry-hopped with millenium i think sometimes dry-hopping a pale ale is a better bet than an ipa you still get the body of a pale ale, plus the bitterness of the hops last night's cask was a definite win!  so nice, i had to have it twice. and get in there soon for the seasonal esb, it won't be around forever! also, cask night at yaletown features a chance to win lions tickets, side-line passes and practice jerseys - one entry per cask beer purchased!

VQFF

there is just no time for beer this week well, not no time, just very little time why this week? well its the vancouver queer film festival august 11 to 21 and i'm spending nine of those 11 days involved with the festival mostly watching films but also three nights of volunteering what a saint i am! the two days in my calendar not taken up with the festival are today and next saturday today i get to go join the vanbrewers and sample their wonderful brews before i hit the bc lions game next week i get to go see two wonderful friends get married and they promise me there will be kegs of craft beer at the reception! (of course i would have gone even without that promise) what does this mean in general? not much to anyone but me and my nearest and dearest really but its my excuse to any of y'all who are reading this for the very light content on the blog over this period! and speaking of volunteering, i'll be pouring at beerlesque next friday night (at th...

stadium beer

Image
stupid bc place signed a five year exclusive deal with budweiser maybe its time to not drink at football games?? in the meantime however, at empire stadium they have those crazy quick bottom filling beer thingies you know the ones, surely you've seen the youtube videos ... i too have video, but don't know how to embed it here... must research that anyway, there are two budweiser stands at empire, one outside of each end zone where you can get a 24oz budweiser poured for you from the bottom in seconds flat there's a magnet in the bottom of the glass to keep the beer in the darned cup but as bridget demonstrates, it is not fool-proof if you push on the bottom of your cup, beer will fall out i was very excited to get my bottom-filled beer novelty is fun however, i discovered how quickly that novelty wears off when you now have a $12 24oz budweiser to drink blech!

happy 125th vancouver

Image
why not celebrate vancouver's 125th birthday at the blarney stone? you can also get your photo taken with the grey cup if you're gonna be at granville and georgia in the wee hours of the morning 6:30 - 8 April 6th (like i will be - yay for early mornings, not) or at the convention centre from 2:00 to 10:00 p.m. i love me the grey cup!

happy hallowe'en!

Image
i'll be spending my hallowe'en afternoon at empire stadium enjoying the last bc lions' home game of 2010 and the last game in the outdoor stadium i've enjoyed the stadium i'll admit to being quite apprehensive at first about sitting outside in vancouver weather but it has been mostly very enjoyable good choice to be all nostalgic this year while bc place is under destruction/construction/obstruction but the beer you just knew i was gonna have to bitch about the beer! what's with horribly insipid beer at outrageously inflated prices? blech! next year, in the newly improved bc place, i would very much like to see some craft beer even a return to russell's horrid bc lions lager would be an improvement over the bud and bud light lime! but what if we got good beer? c'mon howe sound, c'mon r & b, c'mon dead frog, c'mon storm someone get the contract for the stadium and give us good beer for our overpriced enjoyment!!

beer fact of the day

Craft Beer Locator Beer Fact of the Day: Wiki estimates 1,500 gallons of beer is consumed during a major league baseball game. Multiple that by 2,430 games each year and you've poured 3,645,000 gallons of beer. This does not count playoffs or World Series or beer consumption at home from fans watching the game on TV. i wonder how much gets poured at bc lions games...  hopefully more this week than last when they add more taps at empire stadium to feed the thirsty football masses!!

empire stadium

Image
empire stadium - the tradition continues that's the motto for the newly resurrected football stadium i very much enjoyed the first lions game to be played outdoors since 1982, even if the leos did fall to edmonton in the dying seconds of the game - bah! its only exhibition! the outdoor stadium is only about half the size of BC Place, but that just meant that it was full for a pre-season game, and my seats are half the distance from the field at Empire than they are at BC Place - that's a big plus!  i shouldn't suffer too much if i forget my darned glasses this season! the minuses:  its gonna be wet and cold sitting outside!  my seats are not covered by the roof, so it might get miserable later in the season. most tragically, the only beer on offer is budweiser.  never my favourite beer, i did go through a period of drinking it regularly when we had two players on our softball team allergic to wheat, making rice-based bud the beer everyone could dr...
