legacy

new beers at legacy liquor store in vancouver: Deschutes Brewery - Class of ’88 Barley Wine - $12.55 25 years ago a beer renaissance occurred across the country and a passion for craft beer ignited. In honour of those 25 years of delicious beer, Deschutes, in collaboration with North Coast and Rogue, have opened a door to the past. Deep orange in colour with notes of caramel, pine and citrus on the nose, this brew offers more caramel, pine and citrus on the palate. A tasty treat from ’88. Conor Marshall | Beer Department | Legacy Liquor Store Old Yale Brewing - D. O. Ale - $7.55 In tribute to the Vancouver punk band D.O.A., this collaboration with CBC music and Old Yale Brewing Co. hits all the right notes (insert rimshot here). Pouring a deep brown in colour with sweet caramel, molasses and toasted malts on the nose, it follows up with honey, brown sugar and nut on the palate, with a little bit of smoke playing backup. Enjoy with your favourite D.O.A album. Jordan Cran | Floor Su...

rogue in richmond

Image
the beerthirst rogue tour de richmond was a whole lotta fun! the concept alone guaranteed a good time:  rogue beers paired with a sandwich at every stop with a school bus to get you from pub a to pub b (c, d and e) first stop:  hogshack beer:  st. rogue red ale sandwich:  sliders with kimchi and spicy carrots (my veggie option was a beet and quinoa patty) pairing:  it worked, the spicy toppings with the rich red ale worked like a charm - the judges chose this as the best pairing the meat slider (and beer) the awesome veggie slider  second stop:  buck and ear beer:  cpt. sig's northwest pale ale food:  halibut, prawn and shrimp tacos with mango salsa, fried potatoes pairing:  to be honest, i was so much all about the amazing flavours bursting in my mouth while eating the taco that i forgot to drink my beer with it, but this pairing won the people's choice, so it musta pleased people!  damned delicious fis...

monday night football

Image
the beers consumed at this week's monday night football fest: the rogue was from last year and was pretty sedimenty thank goodness the bc relaunch of rogue is next week and i can get some more recent juniper pale ale it was a hit with everyone, even with the sediment hope they still like it when it tastes like it should! both the lone wolf and the lucky 13 went over well so far I haven't taken anything to mnf that people hated i love having non-beer-obsessed friends willing to try whatever i bring along for them!

recipe

all i can say is "you're welcome"! beer cupcake recipe :  dark beer chocolate cupcakes with salted caramel frosting (this recipe has been reprinted on several blogs and beer websites, but i think the link above is to the original recipe... if not, i apologize profusely) Cake: 1 cup flavorful dark beer– I used Rogue Mocha Porter but Lagunitas Cappucino Stout and Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout (hometown love!) are also faves. Ask your favorite beer geek for a recommendation. 1/2 cup unsalted butter 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa 2 cups dark brown sugar 2 teaspoons instant espresso powder 3/4 cup sour cream 2 eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 2 cups flour 2 1/2 teaspoons baking soda Combine the beer and butter in a large sauce pan and heat to melt. Remove from heat; whisk in the cocoa, sugar, and espresso. In a bowl, whisk the sour cream with the eggs and vanilla, then whisk into the beer mixture. Sift together the flour and baking soda, and fold into the batter. Pour into...

chili

Image
i think i am losing my ability to appreciate spice in my old age i used to be able to pour on the hot sauce but lately... lately i'm finding all the chili beers i drink to be too spicy they hurt my throat drinking them is just not enjoyable the exception remains rogue's chipotle ale that one i can drink a whole pint of more if i'm sick tuesday night at the railway club the cask was central city's red chili white ale i had a taster of it and it hurt my throat the flavour was lovely, but i couldn't get past the throat burn to have more than a couple of sips same thing happened when i was in portland at burnside brewing they had two spicy ales on the menu i tried them both in my sampler (and they do warn you that they contain the hottest pepper known to man) they smelled divine, but i couldn't get past a sip instant throat ache instant disappointment is it me? or are people putting too much spice in the beer? is it so wrong that i want ...

biercraft and firefly

Image
i spent my lunch hour today at firefly and biercraft success at firefly!  bit of fail at biercraft :( shopping with shans at firefly my hoppy haul biercraft has a new lunch menu and were offering $2 lunches between 11:30 and 1:30 today, plus a $2 coupon for your next lunch visit, meaning that your net spending would end up being zero a free lunch who doesn't want a free lunch? alas, because of the deal they were not able to make substitutions or deletions to their menu items and this vegetarian who isn't eating cheese these days was shit outta luck on menu items bummer but on the bright side, i made it back to work on time! i'm surprised there weren't more people in there taking advantage of the special, but then again, i only heard about it at about 11 this morning...

beernesday

i began beernesday last night with two martinis i love the holiday season! anyway, after my after-work-schmoozey-do i dutifully headed off to st. augustine's to imbibe in craft beer i love craft beer! lagunitas sucks holiday ale - 7.9%  a "cereal medley" of barley, rye, wheat and oats.  full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.85% abv, then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor i love when they joyously dry-hop my beer! and i am in love with this beer - so much hoppy goodness, so many grains - i may have found my new breakfast of champions... seriously, loved it so much i had to have a whole pint after my taster tree spiced reserve ale - 7.5%  brewed using a special blend of brewer's spices special indeed! no vanilla in sight, just subtle spices all blending nicely on the tongue this is the tree winter ale i will choose to drink from now on (no vertical vanilla for me!) rogue yellow snow ipa - 6.2%  pale...

beernesday tasting notes

phew!  all caught up now! november 2, 2011 big al harvest ale - 5.4% four pounds per barrel of fresh yakima sorachi ace hops offer big citrus and fresh lemon flavors and aromas which we paired with deeply refined malt flavors mark this rich and warming medium-bodied amber ale lovely!  love the sorachi ace!  very rich and full-bodied elysian bifrost winter ale - 7.5% taste is bold and balanced with a good amount of citrus and earthy hop bitters to offset the malt character yes, yes, yes! crannog insurrection ipa - 5.4% a pale amber malt body emphasizes munich and caramel malts, with enough sweetness to hold up the rather large volumes of fresh cascade and golding hops light malt with perfect hoppiness, not my favourite ipa but such a joy to drink! big al brougham bitter - 5.5% english-style pale and crystal malts combined with aromatic, floral english hops create a smooth, balanced medium-bodied beer very english, but nicely hopped big al ipa - 7.1% chinook, cas...

beernesday tasting notes

october 19, 2011 rogue chipotle ale - 5.5% roasted chipotle peppers produce an eye opening chile flavor in this deep golden ale with a malty, smoky aroma and smooth, crisp flavor i love chipotle!  so delish! howe sound devil's elbow ipa - 6% an assertive ale that is heavily bittered and dry-hopped providing an intensive aroma and brewed using selected english and north american barley and hops its a baby next to the imperial ipa, but its a lovely tasty baby! paddock wood loki double ipa - 8.7% double ipa weighing in at 80 ibus.  brewed using cascade, amarillo, willamette and ekg hops, giving the beer a strong hop character i dunno about this one... too boozey for me.  but everyone else likes it and isn't finding the booze in it rogue imperial younger's special bitter - 7.5% it has a triad of caramel maltiness, fruitiness and hop bitterness in aroma and flavor and a dry, hoppy finish too boozey for this little princess.  but again, everyone else loves it and c...

not that i'm behind on my notes or anything... here's the past two week's worth of beernesday tastings at st. augustine's september 21, 2011 taster #1 elysian night owl pumpkin ale - 5.9%  brewed with 7 1/2 pounds of pumpkin per barrel and spiked in conditioning with ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and allspice rogue ales chatoe good chit pilsner - 5%  made with rogue farm barley that is floor-malted in small batches crannog bogtrotter brown ale - 4.8%  a nutty, sweet brown ale with a touch of toffee in the flavour red truck ipa - wasn't on the menu i found the bogtrotter to be a "nice little brown - easy drinking" the night owl was pumpkin pieish, not overly spiced... "pretty good, but i don't think i'm ready for fall beers" the pilsner was practically an ipa, so of course i loved it! the red truck ipa was "quite nice" taster #2 russell cranberry wheat ale - 4.7%  we take an already damn fine wheat ale and ad...
