patios

due to a lack of space in the july/august edition of the bc craft beer news my lengthy article on the best craft beer patios in vancouver got truncated the whole article is available online but i'm also copying it here Summer time and the living is easy… not to mention best enjoyed on a patio! In a departure from my usual format and just in time for summer 2014, I bring you the very best patios in Vancouver for enjoying craft beer. The list starts with larger patios and beer menus and goes on down to smaller (but no less enjoyable) venues, with smaller beer menus. Only the heat and the hours available to you will limit your time on these patios, so there is no rating system in this round of reviews. Enjoy! Patio drinking tips: Look for session ales—those tasty lower alcohol beers that enable you to spend a long ‘session’ on a patio. Drink water! Go for a rinse cycle after every beer; your body will love you for it. Keep your drink out of the sunlight—no one likes a beer t...

16 places to drink craft beer in vancouver

chuck hallett (aka barley mowat ) compiled a list of 16 places to drink craft beer in vancouver for vancouvereater.com in advance of vancouver craft beer week i have shamelessy borrowed his list and provide you with links to my reviews of most of these places (which were published in the bc craft beer news over the past year) you know, just in case you haven't actually been to all of these places (which i would only find credible if you don't actually live in vancouver) and wanted to know allllll about them 33 Acres Brewing Company Imagine a sleek Scandinavian Coffee House selling solidly produced sessional ales and lagers and you might have pictured 33 Acres. A sleek white-and-concrete interior kept immaculately clean makes you wonder whether or not you've slipped into an art gallery by mistake, then you realize that you have... The beer is the art. Highlights include Merckx (Saison) and Sunshine (French Blanche).   Rogue Kitchen & Wetbar ...

on the coast

it is one of my cbc radio tuesdays! i will be on radio one with stephen quinn at 5:50 today talking about craft beer and #IPAday on the coast then i will be going to the railway club to avail myself of the cask of driftwood naughty hildegard esb with mosaic hops if that sounds like fun to you, you could go in time to listen to the show my fan club (aka beer geek friends) have a listening party in the back room join them!  so long as they have craft beer in front of them, they do not bite (the cask at tap and barrel also sounds good... might have to try to hit both places! tree brewing blend of 2/3 hophead ipa and 1/3 black ipa)

beer, delicious beer

i have been back on the ambrosia for six days now and i have yet to extol its virtues here bad, bad beer geek! let's work backwards through my past six days last night was beernesday at st. augustine's where i enjoyed a taster flight of howe sound total eclipse of the hops (love this citrusy imperial), hoyne's devil's dream ipa (love this too!), moon under water's victorious weizenbock (cloudy, not too sure about chocolate and wheat together, the banana notes were interesting, and i really enjoyed the new zealand hops) and creepy uncle dunkel (whose vanilla notes were subtle enough for me to enjoy this lovely lager), plus pints of ninkasi total domination ipa (by far the maltiest of my ipas of the evening) and driftwood's fat tug (always a nice way to end an evening) clicky clicky for jan zeschky's review of the hoyne devil's dream tuesday night was cask night at the railway club where i had a lovely jameson-infused stout by central city...

on the coast

my notes from last night's on the coast beer column: the perfect pour: there really is a right way to pour beer!   first of all, the basics. drink out of a glass, not a bottle or a can and make sure the glass is clean - hand-washing and air drying are recommended (hand-washing to avoid soap or food residue from the dishwasher - also keeps any branding on the glass fresh longer - and air drying so you don't get lint or grease from a dishtowel in the glass) the quick answer to why drinking out of a glass is better than a bottle or a can is that you get to appreciate the appearance of the beer as well as the flavour and aromas. also handy is the ability to control the amount of settled yeast sediment from a bottle-conditioned beer that ends up in your mouth - some styles of beer are all about including the yeast (like a hefeweisen), if you pour from the bottle into the glass you'll mix the yeast in nicely. if you don't like yeast, or are drinking a style...

vancouver sun

it is a sunny day in vancouver but the vancouver sun i'm referring to is the newspaper, which currently has two articles about craft beer online: the insatiable taste for craft brews article quotes lundy dale and iain hill and the longer version of the article names names of lots of local drinking holes and breweries like crannog, tap and barrel, r&b, parallel 49, the alibi room, central city, all the soon-to-be-opened new vancouver establishments and goes into nano-breweries like bridge brewing

tap and barrel

tap and barrel in olympic village in vancouver is not officially open yet but they have been soft-opening for over a week now which is kinda cool - you get to tell them what you think of everything and the servers are all very willing to go and find out the answers to all of your questions and believe me, i asked a whole lotta questions! tap and barrel features all local bc products food, beer and wine the beer and the wine are on tap yes, you read that correctly - wine on tap ! peanut butter and bacon jelly make several appearances on the current menu apparently they believe that peanut butter is a great way to show off locally sourced food why not? i began with the pretzel, because i love a pretzel normally only served with one sauce (your choice of mustard, beer & cheese or pb and bacon jelly) i got them to give me a second sauce because i need cheese and mustard to properly enjoy a pretzel the beer and cheese sauce is amazing!  the mustard is must...
