oooh look! i made it to the cbc website and facebook page! B.C. beer festival highlights coming up for fall 2015 On The Coast beer columnist Rebecca Whyman has her picks for the best festivals this year By On The Coast, CBC News Posted: Sep 15, 2015 5:00 PM PT Last Updated: Sep 15, 2015 5:00 PM PT Rebecca Whyman also stopped by to taste some Rhubarb Wit from Big Rock Brewery. She described it as "a classic witbier aged with rhubarb to lend a hint of tartness to subtle notes of orange peel and spice. Unfiltered and delicate." beer column

here are my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio's on the coast: As we head into Fall, the crunching you hear won't just be the leaves under your feet - it may well be the liver of a craft beer lover cracking under the pressure of keeping up with all the fabulous craft beer events in September and October!  And this is by no means an exhaustive listing - there are always so many great beer events on the go, it's hard to keep track of them - and don't even try to get to them all - you'd need to be Hermione Granger to succeed. Start with this past weekend's Great Canadian Beer Festival in Victoria, and end with the BC Beer Awards on October 24th, filling in events every single weekend in between, and you've got a recipe for a sprained liver.  And a really great two months! Both Stephen and I had the pleasure of attending the Great Canadian Beer Festival this year.  This festival is always a well-organized two days of beer tasting.  And f...

cbc column

St. Patrick’s day is approaching.   Can I tempt you to drink something other than green beer? I mean hey, if you're really into green beer, then by all means, drink up.  I hear they'll be serving it at the Blarney Stone. For me though,  food colouring added to beer doesn’t enhance my drinking experience, especially as it is generally added to macro lagers.   I would rather drink flavourful beer!   I find the idea of “drowning the shamrock” for luck, where a clover is added to beer or whisky and the whole thing downed, shamrock and all, a lot more palatable way to put some green in my beer to celebrate the day. Afterall, g reen beer is not an Irish tradition.   So where did green beer come from?   Who thought that it would be a good idea to slip food colouring into beer?   T he earliest reference I found to the drinking of green beer is a newspaper articlefrom 1914 about a New York social club serving green beer at a St. Patrick’s...

almost february

as my self-imposed month of cleansing comes to a close i have some thoughts on trying to be a beer person and live without beer for 31 days first off, let me admit that i didn't make it to 31 days i chose to have drinks on the 14th and the 15th, then tried to go back on the wagon for the rest of the month but alas, once you open that darned pandora's box, it's soooo darned easy to find another good reason to drink! my motives for drinking on the 14th and 15th were pure the ones since then have not been on the 14th i went to an about-to-open brewery and tried a sample of each of their beers this was an opportunity that i didn't feel i could miss out on that i would be cutting off my nose to spite my face if i was to be stubborn and refuse the time-sensitive offer just because it was january i had quite a bit of internal debate about the matter it was not an easy decision to make in the end, i went with my gut and drank the beers two weeks later, i have no ...

beer column

my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio's on the coast with stephen quinn: So you know you like craft beer. Now what? I think learning more about craft beer should be the second thing on everybody's craft beer to do list... right behind drinking more of it! I was at a tasting room the other evening and the folks beside me were very enthusiastic about their craft beers. It appeared they were on a bit of a brewery crawl, which I very much salute, and were trying to find the words to describe the different beers and how they felt about them. Now I'm not going to go all beer snob on you and say that they were using the wrong words to describe the beers, because there aren't wrong words to describe any experience. Sure, they could have used words like "mouthfeel" and "lacing on the glass" and other bits of beer lingo, but that's not what struck me most about these beer appreciators. No, what made me keep listening was th...

caskival

yaletown brewpub's cask festival was good times so many good beers so many fun people to drink with   my favourite beer of the afternoon? pretty hard to choose as there were so many good ones but since you're making me choose, i'll go with the central city collaboration cask with gigantic, parallel 49 and ninkasi imperial ipa - some matured in cognac barrels, some matured in bourbon barrels, then blended and dry-hopped so very, very, very, very delicious (see how i did that four verys there?)

beer column

here are my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio's on the coast with stephen quinn: Get out your calendars and mark down these beer festival dates! There are beer festivals all year round, but right now is a particularly rife season, just thick with festivals here in BC, and it is not entirely due to Oktoberfests!   There’s the Great Canadian Beer festival in Victoria, the BC Beer Awards, Whistler Beer Festival, Yaletown Brewpub's Caskival, Harrison Beer Festival, Powell River Oktoberfest and Bomber Brewing’s Oktoberfest just to name a few. There are definitely elements that are common to all beer festivals – drinking beer for starters – but there are differences, which is why you can’t just say you’ve been to a beer festival and now you’re done.   Some beer festivals have a theme – like Oktoberfest or casks – some are big, some are small, some are about beer and food pairings – like Vancouver’s Brewery and the Beast meat and beer feast – some are hel...

all beer all the time

so much beer so little time to devote to blogging about it woe is me! alibi room - wednesday: - wrath of khan cask - as usual, tariq's brew is ambrosia!  this one is being touted as his "swan song" because it was the last cask he made at big ridge.  but fear not, its not really the end of an era - tariq is still with the mark james group, he's just at yaletown now instead of big ridge - deschutes fresh squeezed ipa - mosaic and citra?  together?  you know this beer is a good one i need to get some bottles of it!  badly! - gigantic ipa - i love ben love! - four winds ipa - i love it when a new brewery makes such great beer right off the gun yaletown - thursday: - espresso stout cask - i wasn't feeling stouty, so i just had a sample - damned fine cask - raspberry wheat ale - summer in a glass! those black raspberries impart a tonne of flavour without too much sweetness.  i'm not a fruity wheaty beer kind of person, but this one i simply ad...

beer column

my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio one's on the coast with stephen quinn summer beers: The weather may not bear witness to the fact, but it is summer. That means a whole new season of beers is upon us.    In general terms, summer is the season of the lager. There are many fabulous summer ales available, but summer is the season in which lagers shine. Much maligned in recent history as flavour-less yellow fizzy beer, there are some wonderful craft brewed lagers available to quench your summer thirst. Cold is not a flavour so I would suggest avoiding a beer that advertises that it is. Instead I'd head for a beer that says it is crisp and refreshing and full of flavour. Also synonymous with summer are wheat ales and fruit beers. Lower alcohol percentages are also often found in a summer beer. When its hot out it is less enjoyable to quaff a 9% ale. A nice light low-alcohol lager just hits the spot so much more. A reminder about the differe...

vcbw - so far

well, i'm alive and still making it to work every day so vancouver craft beer week has not yet totally kicked my ass or any of my major organs! opening night on friday was a really great event they used the roundhouse to its utmost new breweries were on one side, with the lone cider stall lots of space in the middle for stage and oyster bar and mingling then all the old stand-bys on the other side it was packed, but not so full that it took too long to get a beer or from one side to the other and there were oysters! i made it to the yaletown for a pint after the event... which may or may not have been a good idea! saturday i attended the four winds open house out in the boonies no really, its out somewhere that required bridges and tunnels to get to but the beer was good, we were greeted with a casked fir tip ipa sample, growlers and bostons were already filled so no need to wait for yours, the brewery was open for a tour or just wandering around and checking out...
