beer gimmicks, pretentious nonsense and hipster fuckery

my growler article from back in january: BEER GIMMICKS, PRETENTIOUS NONSENSE AND OTHER HIPSTER FUCKERY REBECCA WHYMAN •  JANUARY 16, 2018 iStock photo This past fall, gruits – that ancient, hopless beer style flavoured with herbs that seems to be all the rage right now – got me thinking about the elusive line that divides fads, trends, and gimmicks from creative innovations and emerging styles. How do beer geeks decide where they categorize any given beer? Are gimmicky beers harming the reputation of craft beer? I like to think of myself as a beer evangelist (also brilliant, witty, gorgeous and humble…). It is therefore my self-appointed duty to bring people into the fold. I love finding the craft beer that makes a former macro lager drinker’s eyes light up, and introducing a non-beer-drinker to a style they can’t believe is actually beer because it tastes so good. I worry, probably too much, about how people perceive craft beer. Craft beer gets kudos for qualities...

election beers - or what you should drink tonight!

my suggestions for surviving the US presidential election: What should you drink tonight? Craft beer, obviously! And since I'm in lovely BC, I'm going to list a bunch of local beers: You could decide by beer names: Whatever you think of the candidates, Brassneck Brewing probably has a beer named for it.  Stop by the tasting room to fill a growler of Dark Place, Mr. Personality, One Trick Pony, Passive Aggressive, No Brainer, Old Money or Sticks and Stones.  Or stay at the tasting room to enjoy a television-free environment and blissfully ignore the whole crazy circus! Maybe you’re really not a fan of either candidate.  Perhaps a Jerkface 9000 from Parallel 49 would taste good to you.  It’s an easy drinking American wheat ale dry hopped with Mosaic Hops. Light and refreshing with a tropical hop punch, it just might you feel better about the whole thing. (5%, available in six packs of bottles).  Parallel 49 also has a pair of cask beers on tap t...

summer beers

my notes from tuesday's beer column on cbc radio one's on the coast with stephen quinn: Spring, schming! This year we seem to have skipped Spring and gone directly to Summer.  Here's what I think you should drink now Summer's here: Generally people like a more effervescent beer in the summer months.  When the weather heats up, people lean more towards the beers that seem “lighter” – in body, and often in alcohol too.  Wheat beers are a great summer choice as they have extra thirst quenching ability because of their increased acidity from the wheat: Belgian witbiers are brewed with malted barley and raw wheat, lightly spiced with coriander and bitter orange peel, and subtly hopped.  They pair really well with vinaigrette salads, shrimp, thai food and brunch faves like bacon and eggs.   Local examples of the style:   Yellow Dog Take a Walk Wit – 4.9% - available in 4 packs of tall cans and at the tasting room; Strange Fello...
