beer column

my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio one's on the coast with gloria macarenko sitting in for stephen quinn There really is no right or wrong way to pair food and beer, it really comes down to personal taste. Different beers bring out different flavours in food, leading to different experiences. There are some guidelines, like following the three c’s – complement, contrast and cut – but the best way to find an excellent pairing is to experiment for yourself.   The theory behind “Complement” is pairing like with like: chocolate stout with chocolate dessert.  In contrast (ha ha), the “Contrast” is just like it sounds: pairing opposites, like sweet with savoury.  To “Cut” is to use the carbonation in beer to cut through the fat in food or to use the bitterness in beer to cut through the sweet in a dish.  These three “c’s” are a good starting point for beer and food pairing experiments. Usually when we talk about food and beer pairings we a...

Beer has come a long way over the past few years, making its way from late night kitchen relief to prime time dining room enjoyment. In collaboration with five of Vancouver...

legacy liquor store

fun and fabulous beers available at legacy liquor store in vancouver: Lighthouse Brewing Barnacle Wheat IPA - $7.25 The breweries on Vancouver Island certainly know what they’re doing, and this IPA is a perfect example. Golden in colour with a nose of spice and pepper, and a palate that continues to profile spice and floral hops, this dry piney IPA shines when enjoyed with Thai and Indian food. Powell Street Brewery Belgian Witbier - $7.95 Local boys at Powell Street have produced a perfectly spiced beer for the burgeoning summer season, with orange peel, coriander, cardamom and ginger all coming together for a sweet Easter-bread aroma. An off-dry finish is preceded by ginger and spice on the palate. Driftwood Brewery Clodhopper - $8.95 A traditional Belgian-style Dubbel brewed on beautiful Vancouver Island, Driftwood has gone the extra mile with this brew using locally grown malt from the Sannich peninsula. Who’d have thought you could find a bit of Belgium right here on our doors...

i'm ba-ack!

i'm back from my whirlwind tour of burlington, hamilton and toronto! two quick observations: 1. there is a much more vibrant craft beer community in the lower mainland than in megacity 2. i was only gone for a week, but while i was away did the cascadia ever hit the nitro! and quickly, before i get back to work the ginger pale ale cask at the yaletown brew pub last night was delicious! in a cameo appearance, cory brewed this one with a big bag of fresh ginger and he hit one outta the park!  it was not too gingery, no other spices to mess with the big ginger flavour, it was just right! more when i've had a chance to catch my breath (and unsprain my poor liver)
