beer column

my notes from tuesday's beer column on cbc radio one's on the coast with stephen quinn: The pace of brewery openings appears to be slowing somewhat in Vancouver.  But there have been several brewery openings already this year across the province – among them Back Roads Brewing in Nelson, not to be confused with Back Country Brewing in Squamish!  And Highway 97 Brewing in Penticton, Gibsons Tapworks, and Twin City Brewing in Port Alberni also opened. Existing breweries continue to expand as well, so the thirst for craft beer isn’t waning!  I think there is still room in Vancouver’s market for more craft breweries, and definitely there is a lot of room in many underserviced areas in the province. So far most of the local breweries share a common model.  Some of the exceptions being Callister’s cooperative set-up, as mentioned a moment ago, Factory’s contract model and Howe Sound’s ownership of R&B Brewing, where they continue to make R&B brand beer...

beer column

my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio one's on the coast with stephen quinn with my look ahead to 2016: After exhaustive research, I believe that 2015 closed with 113 craft breweries in B.C. - except, in talking to Joe Wiebe, I'm questioning that number.  He says that if you exclude all the shadow brands, contract brewers without their own brewery and multiple locations, the number is actually exactly 100.  So I'm going with the number of craft breweries in B.C. is somewhere between 100 and 113 at the end of 2015. What I do know is that 20 new craft breweries opened in B.C. in 2015.  5 of those were in Vancouver, 8 in the Lower Mainland and 5 on Vancouver Island. And there are more breweries in the works for B.C. in 2016! The Georgia Straight says that there will be 15 breweries opening in 2016, and The Growler puts the number at more like 20.   The ones that I am aware of who are close to opening are:  Faculty Brewing...

Apparently I am over my seasonal denial and  willing to admit that it’s not summer any more.  So I guess it's time to talk about winter seasonal beers. As you may recall,  I’m not at all a fan of the heavy-handed use of vanilla in winter ales.  I find that cloying and annoying. Vanilla isn’t a traditional winter ale flavouring.  Spicing beers is fairly traditional – before the wide usage of hops to bitter beer it used to be herbs and spices and tree bark that were used.  It was a natural progression from there to add some spices to a nice winter ale, but these spices tended to be nutmeg, cinnamon, and allspice . Vanilla is a recent trend, and seems to have really caught on here in the Lower Mainland.  For those who, like me, aren’t big fans of the vanilla trend, there are more traditional winter ales, and other experimental ales around, in a variety of styles and flavours. One such beer is the Postmark Red Winter Ale.  The new bre...

beer column

Because I just can’t say it enough times, lemme tell you what a great time it is to be a craft beer drinker in Vancouver.   Yes, I know I’m always saying that it’s a great time to be a craft beer lover, but it is true!   And it just keeps on getting better. The nay-sayers are predicting that this is a bubble that will eventually burst, and maybe they’re right. But for right now, and the foreseeable future, craft beer is booming, and we’re all the winners.   2015 is a mere four months old, and already we’ve had several new breweries open Province-wide; a couple of breweries have added craft cider to their line-ups; two out of town breweries are opening up brewing spaces in Vancouver; and one of Alberta’s large breweries has opened a Vancouver location – Big Rock Brewing opened an Urban Eatery on West 4 th (coincidently at the corner of Alberta) on April 10th.   Big Rock says that it’ll keep the Vancouver location local by brewing small batches on site f...

beer gifts for the holiday season

also known as my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio's on the coast with stephen quinn gifts for the beer lover:   The holiday season is in full swing. Are you done your shopping yet? Is there still a beer lover or two on your list? Never fear, here are some gift ideas for the beer lovers in your life. It's too late now to get the beer advent calendars from Craft Beer Importers, featuring 10 Canadian beers, 13 American beers and 1 Mexican beer.  That one is available in early November and usually sells out within days of its arrival in stores, even with a price tag of $130. However, new this year is Phillips' Snowcase - featuring 24 different beers from Phillips, including regular offerings, seasonals and barrel-aged beers and a more modest price tag of $60 - and there may still be a few available around town at government liquor stores.   The beer advent calendar is a gift you have to plan ahead for. Luckily, there are plenty of ...

press release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CRAFT BEER TAKES ON CHILLIWACK CHILLIWACK, BC— The arts and crafts programs at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre are about to get a big boost. A much needed fundraiser has been launched by the Chilliwack Arts & Cultural Centre Society Board of Directors, entitled the Fraser Valley CULTURE & CRAFT BEER Festival , debuting Saturday, November 30, 2013. A unique focus on craft beer will highlight the event, alongside local cuisine and Chilliwack rockers, The Lounge Hounds, sure to create a ridiculously good time. For the past 50 years, beers in the hands of the average Canadian have been put there by mega corporations with the wrong focus. Concentrating on how much they’re selling instead of what they are selling. Over the last several years, craft brewing has become the fastest growing beer segment in Canada. Craft brewing is innovative, full of curiousity, collaboration, and tradition. Craft brewers make their community a better place. For the f...
