beer column

my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio's on the coast with stephen quinn: Coralee Oakes, the BC Minister of Small Business and Red Tape Reduction announced last week that as of November 30th government liquor stores will be able to carry up to twelve local craft beers that are non-listed.  Being non-listed means that the products are not otherwise available at the government stores. The new program is timed to coincide with BC Buy Local Week.   Buy Local Week is "an annual celebration of local business to promote the contributions that BC businesses make to our economy and our communities".  Craft breweries definitely fit that bill - they're contributing more and more to local economies and are changing the face of neighbourhoods, so you can't fault the Ministry on their timing! There are currently 102 breweries in the province which qualify as microbreweries by the Province and can take advantage of the initiative.  To be considered...

hop stout

ooooh, hoppy stout?!? sounds delicious! Dark and Bitter - Brace Your ‘Buds for New Belgium Brewing’s Hop Stout Latest Hop Kitchen release is brawny, bitter and best of both brewing worlds Ft. Collins, Colo., September 28, 2015 – As the days grow colder and the nights get long, New Belgium Brewing has unleashed one of the burliest beers of their Hop Kitchen series with 100 IBU’s of beautiful black bitterness. Hop Stout entices with a sweet, malty depth before a wicked bite of hops kicks in with the force of an imperial stout grappling with an IPA. Hop Stout pours a deep, delicious chocolate brown with a creamy head atop. Dark chocolate, roasted coffee and toasted bread notes emerge from the blending of eight different grains and six hop varieties, which accent the richness with a citrusy, woodsy pop. Equinox, Chinook and Willamette are just a few of the hops that arm this unique stout. “We wanted a wickedly hoppy and deeply malty stout to celebrate the fall season,” said Gra...

from stone brewing: AN IPA THAT LIVES UP TO ITS NAME   We’ve brewed many India pale ales over the past 18 years, from double-down bitter bombs to piney session sippers. Whether it’s big IBUs or a precise ABV, there’s usually a target we’re shooting for. The same is true of this, our latest IPA, but we gave zero thought to any acronyms. This one was all about packing as much unique and delicious flavor into a glass as humanly possible, regardless of oomph or octane. This intensely citrusy, beautifully bitter beer is worthy of the simple-yet-lordly title of Stone Delicious IPA . Lemondrop and El Dorado hops combine to bring on a magnificent lemon candy-like flavor that's balanced by hop spice. It’s unlike anything we’ve ta...

back to some heavy hitting beers for the next instalment of "what i drank on my lost saturday" the fabulous ryan brought back some fine beers from his recent sojourn in las vegas stone brewing's belgo anise imperial russian stout certainly did not disappoint a licorice stout - how delightful! such a strong malt base totally hid the belgian yeast from my leery mouth and what a head! hoppy, stouty, licoricey, not belgiany, not overwhelmingly boozey - its a winner! i would love to have another bottle of this to age for a year or two... 10.5%, 56 ibus, warrior hops "This 2011 Odd Year release pours pitch black with a deep tan head, with aromatic notes of anise, coffee, and cocoa jumping from the glass. Coffee and dark roasted malt flavors dominate, with a robust complement of anise and oak, which leave a lingering blend of vanilla, licorice, and dark malt on the palate. This one will age nicely for several years." doing my best vanna white impression brew...

from the camra newsletter: At last year's Vancouver Home Brewing Awards Matt Anderson and Danny Seeton took the Best in Show award for their 'Rocket to Russia' bourbon oak-aged Imperial Stout, and as part of their award they've brewed a full 14000 litre batch of this beer with Yaletown Brewing brewmaster Iain Hill. After spending over a month and a half conditioning, Rocket to Russia will go on tap this Thursday at Yaletown Brewing. Matt, Danny, and Iain describe this 10.5% abv Imperial Stout as being very smooth with a distinctive American oak flavour reminiscent of new world red wines. Matt, Danny, and Iain will be on hand for the launch at this Thursday's cask event. i hear that the launch went really well and that you can still try the rocket to russia - so get on over there and try some!! way to go guys!
