free the hops!

my growler article from last november: FREE THE HOPS! REBECCA WHYMAN •  NOVEMBER 24, 2017 iStock photo Of the four ingredients in beer, hops are the New World’s contribution. It seems rather fitting then, that North America has its economic paws  allll  over hops. Trademarks, patents, royalties – how are these business-y things having their way with our beloved hops? It must be big beer’s fault! I understand why you’d want to make hops proprietary – it takes time, effort and money to painstakingly develop a new hop, test it eight ways to Sunday, and devote acreage to propagating it. It can take 15-20 years before any money starts coming in, and then on only a fraction of your experiments. But do you really need 20 years of royalties to recoup that investment? Off the backs of your growers and the lovely brewers who exalt your wonder-hop? C’mon, only big beer would do such a greedy thing. Experimental breeding has brought us wonder-hops that can do it all: h...

More than just another IPA 4 Hands / Bale Breaker / Stone Sorry Not Sorry IPA For our latest collaboration, we ventured into uncharted territory with 4 Hands Brewing Co. and Bale Breaker Brewing Company—two rising stars of American craft brewing. Brewed with experimental hops HBC 342 and HBC 344, along with beloved varietals Simcoe and Mosaic, this imperial IPA's stone fruit, pine, tropical fruit, berry and citrus notes are amplified by a dose of puréed peaches. So, yeah, we made (more than just) another IPA:  #SorryNotSorry . Read more about this unapologetically  delicious beer on The Stone Blog . For those of you who are thinking, "Is this beer coming to my area and, if so, when?" we have created our  new, exclusive "beer tracker." This great tool, located on the beer's official web page , will serve as a  handy companion to ...

from stone: Our Favorite Overseas-Inspired  IPA Returns! You may recall the herbaceous, bitingly hoppy fund-raising IPA we brewed four years ago to help provide relief for Japanese earthquake and tsunami victims. And if you do, we know you loved it every bit as much as we did. We originally brewed Baird/Ishii/Stone Japanese Green Tea IPA  with our friends Toshi Ishii, owner of Ishii Brewing Co. in Guam, and Bryan Baird of Japan's Baird Brewing Company , and we couldn't be happier to announce that it's back with the original crew on board. The recipe has been updated slightly, using a new Australian hop variety, Helga, in place of 2011's New Zealand Pacifica hops, but the 2015 version is still packed with all of the unique flavor combinations that you loved the first time around. This spectacular, tea-infused IPA will set sail beginning Monday, January 12. You can prepare for its arrival by watching the new video  and reading up on the tast...

beer column

here are my notes from yesterday's beer column on cbc radio's on the coast: As the year draws to a close, let's recap the beer happenings in 2014. 2014 has been quite the year for craft beer!   So far 20 new breweries have opened up across the province. I’d like to welcome the newest Vancouver craft brewery:   S trangefellows!   Strangefellows is now open on Clark Drive in East Vancouver .   They are still jumping through hoops to get their lounge endorsement, so currently they’re just serving up growler fills.   Iain Hill, formerly of Yaletown BrewPub, is the brewmaster and he is well-known in the craft beer world for his incredible sour beers.   Strangefellows will have a barrel program, so look for sour beers from them in 2015.   Currently they have a deliciously hoppy pale ale on tap that is a mere 3.8%, a wit, a lager and a brown ale. Also freshly opened are Category 12 Brewing in Central Saanich and Sherwood Mountain Brewhouse in Terrac...
